The objective of this study was to characterize trends in cancer-related research publications by authors affiliated to Puerto Rican institutions in recent decades. Manuscripts were retrieved from the Science Citation Index (SCI) database from 1982 to 2009. Search criterions were that the author's affiliation field contained some institution located in Puerto Rico and that the manuscripts were related to cancer research (according to keywords from the National Cancer Institute' cancer definition). Indexes measured in our analysis included number and type of manuscript, scientific collaboration, author's affiliation, and journal visibility. All the analyses were conducted using ProCite for bibliographic information management and STATA and SEER Joinpoint for the statistical inquiry. From 1982-2009, cancer-related papers authored by scientists located in Puerto Rico came to 451. Over the last three decades the scientific production underwent significant growth (APC = 6.4%, p < 0.05) with the highest peak between 2000 and 2009 (61.4% of all articles). Universities are the local institutional sector with the highest number of authors (81.4%), and the University of Puerto Rico is the most active center in this regard (68.5%). Forty-three percent of the manuscripts (n = 195) were published in 20 journals from which 14 are observed to have high visibility when compared to similar thematic journals. Cancer-scientific production in Puerto Rico underwent constant growth during the last three decades. A complete understanding of citing, publishing, and collaboration patterns in Puerto Rico is critical to researchers, policy makers, and health-care professionals in order to make informed decisions about cancer research priorities.

The main aim of this study is to present the characteristics and trends of cancer publications in Puerto Rico's biomedical journals and their relationship with the island's cancer mortality. METHODS: A PubMed and a hard-copy search were performed to retrieve cancer-related articles published in the Puerto Rico Health Sciences Journal and the Boletín de la Asociación Médica de Puerto Rico from 1903 to 2005. Bibliometric indicators studied included the number of authors and references by article, first author's institutional affiliation and country, document type, and language. The study type and tumor classification were also recorded. Cancer proportional mortality (M%) in Puerto Rico and the proportion of cancer-related articles (P%) published were also evaluated. The annual percent change (APC) was estimated to assess trends. RESULTS: A total of 369 articles were retrieved. The institutions with the majority of publications were universities (39.6%), English was the predominant publication language (72.1%), and the principal document type was original papers (69.6%). Epidemiologic studies were the dominant study type (62.1%), and the most studied cancers were digestive (15.4%) and gynecologic (9.6%). Although the P% has increased since 1913 (APC = 1.2%), the M% increased at a faster pace (APC = 2.7%). CONCLUSIONS: Although a growth in the number of cancer publications is observed in these journals, it does not parallel the increase in proportional mortality. A better understanding of the cancer publications in Puerto Rico is essential to establish priorities, define future areas of research, and develop cancer control strategies.

• Trends in scientific activity addressing transmissible spongiform encephalopathies: a bibliometric study covering the period 1973–2002

  Abstract Background The purpose of this study is to analyse the trends in scientific research on transmissible spongiform encephalopathies by applying bibliometric tools to the scientificAbstract Background The purpose of this study is to analyse the trends in scientific research on transmissible spongiform encephalopathies by applying bibliometric tools to the scientific literature published between 1973 and 2002. Methods The data for the study were obtained from Medline database, in order to determine the volume of scientific output in the above period, the countries involved, the type of document and the trends in the subject matters addressed. The period 1973–2002 was divided in three sub-periods. Results We observed a significant growth in scientific production. The percentage of increase is 871.7 from 1973 to 2002. This is more evident since 1991 and particularly in the 1996–2001 period. The countries found to have the highest output were the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, France and Germany. The evolution in the subject matters was almost constant in the three sub-periods in which the study was divided. In the first and second sub-periods, the subject matters of greatest interest were more general, i.e Nervous system or Nervous system diseases, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, Scrapie, and Chemicals and Drugs, but in the last sub-period, some changes were observed because the Prion-related matters had the greatest presence. Collaboration among authors is small from 1973 to 1992, but increases notably in the third sub-period, and also the number of authors and clusters formed. Some of the authors, like Gajdusek or Prusiner, appear in the whole period. Conclusion The study reveals a very high increase in scientific production. It is related also with the beginnings of research on bovine spongiform encephalopathy and variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, with the establishment of progressive collaboration relationships and a reflection of public health concerns about this problem.

Some one-dimensional bibliometric indicators have been used and techniques of one-variant statistics analysis have been applied to demonstrate its evolution in time. The increase in production of the research groups from the island in the Health Science area has been tested and the main areas of research, as well as some aspects related to co-operation between researchers at national and international levels, have been identified. Furthermore, the high level of visibility in the research is verified and the habits related to documentary typology and language in which researchers release their work, as well as magazines used for their publication is highlighted.Este trabajo identifica y expone algunas características de la producción científica en ciencias de la salud de instituciones radicadas en Puerto Rico durante el período de 1990 a 1998, utilizando para ello la base de datos del Science Citation Index (SCI), producida por el Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) de Filadelfia. Han sido utilizados indicadores bibliométricos unidimensionales y multidimensionales para mostrar su evolución en el tiempo. Se ha comprobado el aumento de la producción de los grupos de investigación en la isla en el área de ciencias de la salud, identificándose las principales áreas de investigación, así como algunos aspectos relacionados con la colaboración entre investigadores a nivel nacional e internacional. Además, se comprueba que la visibilidad de la investigación es alta y se exponen los hábitos en cuanto a la tipología documental y el idioma en que los investigadores dan a conocer su trabajo, así como las revistas más utilizadas para publicarlos.

The information for this study has been obtained from the analysis of the accesses made in the Access to Databases Service of the Carlos III University library, paying a special attention to the behaviour of the teaching departments during the 1995-1998 period. The evolution in the use of on-line databases is valued and the indicators, which typify the trends and patterns of use from the part of those users, are analysed. Some of the criteria highlighted by the interaction between the user, new technologies and electronic sources of information in university libraries.En este trabajo se identifican y muestran, mediante la aplicación de técnicas estadísticas e indicadores unidimensionales y multidimensionales, algunas de las características manifestadas por la comunidad de usuarios de la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid en el uso de las bases de datos. La información para el estudio se ha obtenido a partir del análisis de los accesos realizados en el Servicio de Acceso a Bases de Datos de la Biblioteca de la Universidad Carlos III, prestando especial atención al comportamiento de los departamentos docentes durante el período 1995 a 1998. Se valora la evolución del uso de las bases de datos en red y se analizan los indicadores que tipifican las tendencias y patrones de uso por parte de estos usuarios. Se exponen, además, algunos criterios sobre la interacción entre el usuario, las nuevas tecnologías y las fuentes electrónicas de información en las bibliotecas universitarias.

• La actividad científica española en ciencias médicas en el período 1991-1999

  The group of Spanish medical sciences researchers is studied. Unidimensional and relational bibliometric indicators are used to analyze the papers published by the researchers processed in theThe group of Spanish medical sciences researchers is studied. Unidimensional and relational bibliometric indicators are used to analyze the papers published by the researchers processed in the MEDLINE database from 1991 to 1999. The results show that the Spanish scientific production in medical sciences has raised in more than 70 %. Likewise, its weight concerning world production has increased from 1.4 % to 2 %. Biology-biochemistry, general medicine, neurosciences and nephrology-urology are the most published topics. A rise has also been observed in the size of the research groups and in the coauthorship index from 4.58 to 5.09 authors/document. The journal article has been the most used type of document to spread research. 15 of the 17 most productive journals are Spanish. The relational indicators utilized, which are based on the correspondence analysis, reveal a clear differentiation between institutional sectors, according to the topics in which their researchers work. Hospitals show their preference for clinical areas, whereas the universities prefer basic research areas. The scientific activity in the field of medical sciences has had a significant change in Spain. Most of the research activity is developed by the health sector, where applied investigation is made.
