Article: Microbial analysis of Malaysian tempeh, and characterization of two bacteriocins produced by isolates of Enterococcus faecium
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Aims: Isolation of bacteriocinogenic lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from the Malaysian mould-fermented product tempeh and characterization of the produced bacteriocin(s).Methods and Results: LAB were present in high numbers in final products as well as during processing. Isolates, Enterococcus faecium B1 and E. faecium B2 (E. faecium LMG 19827 and E. faecium LMG 19828, respectively) inhibited Gram-positive indicators, including Listeria monocytogenes. Partially purified bacteriocins showed a proteinaceous nature. Activity was stable after heat-treatment except at alkaline pH values. Both strains displayed a bacteriostatic mode of action. Bacteriocin production was associated with late exponential/early stationary growth. Molecular mass, calculated by SDS-PAGE, was 3·4 kDa for B1 bacteriocin, and 3·4 kDa and 5·8 kDa for B2 bacteriocins. PCR screening of enterocin-coding genes revealed three amplified fragments in total genomic DNA that may correspond with PCR signals for enterocin P, enterocin L50A and enterocin L50B. Both B1 and B2 contained a 42-kb plasmid. No differences in bacteriocinogenic capacity were found between wild type strains and plasmid-cured strains. Conclusions: It was possible to isolate bacteriocinogenic E. faecium active against various Gram-positive bacteria from final products of tempeh.Significance and Impact of the Study: A first step in applying biopreservation to fermented South-east Asian foods is to obtain bacteriocinogenic LAB from this source. Such isolates may also be used for biopreservation of mould-fermented foods in general, including various types of mould-ripened cheese.Journal of Applied Microbiology 12/2001; 92(1):147 - 157. · 2.34 Impact Factor -
Article: Investigation of high spin states in23Na and23Mg and the12C+12C resonance atEc.m.=19.3 MeV
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The resonance in the12C+12C system atE c.m.=19.3 MeV has been studied in the neutron and proton decay channels. From(p, ), (n, p) and (n, ) coincidence measurements high spin states could be localized inA=23 nuclei, in23Mg up to possibly 21/2+. These states were resonantly populated. The present data favorJ =17/2+ for the 9.61 MeV state in23Mg and therefore also for the probable parent state at 9.81 MeV in23Na. AJ =12+ assignment to the resonance is supported and evidence was found that the resonant excitation of the lowest 15/2+ and 17/2+ states in mass 23 nuclei is caused by a change of the intrinsic structure of the Yrast levels aroundJ =15/2+ towards larger deformation.Zeitschrift für Physik A Hadrons and Nuclei 01/1977; 280(3):287-307. -

Article: First measurement of the deep-inelastic structure of proton diffraction
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: A measurement is presented, using data taken with the H1 detector at HERA, of the contribution of diffractive interactions to deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering. The diffractive contribution to the proton structure function is evaluated as a function of the appropriate deep-inelastic scattering variables using a class of deep-inelastic ep scattering events with no hadronic energy flow in an interval of pseudo-rapidity adjacent to the proton beam direction. The dependence of this contribution on x-pomeron is consistent with both a diffractive interpretation and a factorisable ep diffractive cross section. A first measurement of the deep-inelastic structure of the pomeron in the form of a factorised structure function is presented. This structure function is observed to be consistent with scale invariance. -
