ABSTRACT: The propagation of an intense short-pulse laser beam is observed through
shadowgraphy and self-scattered images. This is achieved by focusing the
Vulcan:CPA laser at intensities greater than 5×10^18
Wcm-2 to the edge of a supersonic gas jet. The creation of a
plasma channel suitable for guiding a laser beam is observed by
shadowgraphy. The termination of this channeling plasma is observed to
coincide with the emission of intense Raman side-scatter. The
implications of the observed behaviour will be given, especially in view
of such applications as plasma based particle accelerators and the fast
ignitor ICF scheme. The simultaneous measurement of the generated
electron beam characteristics will also be discussed. These measurements
are made by using the novel technique of nuclear activation
measurements.
