Article: Determination of the leptonic branching ratios of the Z
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The ratios of the numbers of Z bosons decaying to e+e−, μ+μ− and τ+τ− pairs to the number decaying to hadrons have been measured. The branching ratios and partial widths for each channel were determined and found to be equal, consistent with lepton universality. The mean leptonic branching ratio was found to be 0.0321 ± 0.0013 and the leptonic partial width to be 85.4 ± 5.3 MeV. The partial widths for hadronic decays and for invisible decays were deduced to be 1833 ± 116 MeV and 569 ± 92 MeV, respectively. The number of light neutrino types, assuming only the standard model value for the ratio , was found to be 3.35 ± 0.41.Physics Letters B. -

Article: Study of the Bs0Bs0 oscillation frequency using Ds− ℓ+ combinations in Z decays
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: A lower limit on the oscillation frequency of the Bs0s0 system is obtained from approximately four million hadronic Z decays accumulated using the ALEPH detector at LEP from 1991 to 1995. Leptons are combined with opposite sign Ds− candidates reconstructed in seven different decay modes as evidence of semileptonic Bs0 decays. Criteria designed to ensure precise proper time reconstruction select 277Ds−ℓ+ combinations. The initial state of these Bs0 candidates is determined using an algorithm optimized to efficiently utilise the tagging information available for each event. The limit at 95% confidence level on the Bs0s0 oscillation frequency is Δms > 6.6 ps−1. The same data is used to update the measurement of the Bs0 lifetime,τs = 1.54−0.13+0.14 (stat) ± 0.04 (syst) ps.Physics Letters B. -
Article: Measurement of αs from scaling violations in fragmentation functions in e+e− annihilation
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: A study of scaling violations in fragmentation functions performed by the ALEPH collaboration at LEP is presented. Data samples enriched in uds, c, b and gluon jets, respectively, together with measurements of the longitudinal and transverse inclusive cross sections are used to extract the fragmentation function for the gluon and for each flavour. The measurements are compared to data from experiments at energies between 22 GeV and 91 GeV and scaling violations consistent with QCD predictions are observed. From this, a measurement of the strong coupling constant αs(Mz) = 0.126 ±0.009 is obtained.Physics Letters B. -
Article: Search for particles with unexpected mass and charge in Z decays
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: During 1989 and 1990 over 180 000 hadronic and leptonic events, corresponding to 8 pb−1 of luminosity, were collected by the ALEPH detector in a scan of the Z peak at the e+e− collider LEP. This letter reports the results of a search in these data for particles with unexpected mass and charge by measurement of the ionization energy loss of charged tracks in the ALEPH TPC central tracking detector. The mass limits for the pair production of fractionally charged particles and of heavy, long lived charged particles are extended to 43 GeV/c2 at 90% confidence level. If single production of a heavy particle is considered, the mass limit is extended to more than 70 GeV/c2.Physics Letters B. -

Article: The CMS silicon tracker
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The new silicon tracker layout (V4) is presented. The system aspects of the construction are discussed together with the expected tracking performance. Because of the high radiation environment in which the detectors will operate, particular care has been devoted to the study of the characteristics of heavily irradiated detectors. This includes studies on performance (charge collection, cluster size, resolution, efficiency) as a function of the bias voltage, integrated fluence, incidence angle and temperature. -
