Article: A rare combination of an endocrine tumour of the common bile duct and a follicular lymphoma of the ampulla of Vater: a case report and review of the literature
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Abstract Carcinoid tumours of the common bile duct represent an extremely rare entity. Similarly, primary follicular lymphomas of the ampulla of Vater constitute an infrequent neoplasia. Herein, we report the first case of a synchronous development of a carcinoid tumour of the common bile duct and an ampullary follicular lymphoma that was treated surgically with a Whipple's procedure, due to inability to establish definitive preoperative diagnosis despite the extensive diagnostic investigation.World Journal of Surgical Oncology. 01/2011; -
Article: Concurrent insulinoma and pancreatic adenocarcinoma: report of a rare case and review of the literature
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Abstract Pancreatic adenocarcinoma is the 5th leading cause of cancer-related death in Western countries and insulinomas are rare endocrine neoplasms of the pancreas. The concurrent appearance of pancreatic adenocarcinoma and insulinoma is very rare and to the best of our knowledge has never been reported again. Herein, we present such an occurrence in a 74-year-old man. Resection of a mass in the uncinate process of the pancreas revealed pancreatic adenocarcinoma with severe desmoplastic reaction. Two years later, due to symptomatology persistence the patient was re-examined and a new 2cm mass in the uncinate process was found leading to surgery, which demonstrated a 2cm endocrine islet-cell tumor. Establishing a diagnosis in patients with insulinoma is difficult and the imaging studies still have low sensitivity and specificity except for intra-operative ultrasonography, which is the most accurate method detecting 90% of these lesions.World Journal of Surgical Oncology. 01/2011; -
Article: The Diet-Lifestyle Index evaluating the quality of eating and lifestyle behaviours in relation to the prevalence of overweight/obesity in adolescents.
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: We sought to develop an index that incorporated various dietary and lifestyle behaviours that are associated with overweight/obesity status in adolescents. We assigned discrete scores into each component of the proposed index. The Diet-Lifestyle Index ranged from 11 to 57. We examined the accuracy of the index in relation to adolescents' body mass status using a sample of 2,008 students. The mean score of the index was 30.9+/-5.2 for boys and 31.4+/-4.7 for girls. The index was inversely associated with the odds of being obese/overweight (odds ratio = 0.93, 95% confidence interval=0.90-0.96), after adjusting for age and gender. Particularly, an 11/57-unit increase of the index was associated with a 6% and 9% decrease in the odds of being overweight/obesity in boys and girls, respectively (P<0.001). Thus, the proposed Diet-Lifestyle Index could be a useful tool in a primary healthcare setting for preventing obesity in adolescence.International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition 05/2009; 60 Suppl 3:34-47. · 1.15 Impact Factor -
Article: Intrapancreatic accessory spleen issues: diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Intrapancreatic accessory spleen is an exceptionally rare entity, commonly mistaken for a pancreatic neoplasm. Preoperative diagnosis based on radiologic imaging features is difficult. Aspiration cytology may be misleading due to poor sampling. We report a very rare case of an intrapancreatic accessory spleen which radiologically and cytologically mimicked a neuroendocrine pancreatic tumor. Modern imaging techniques will probably lead to an increasing number of intrapancreatic accessory spleens being discovered, posing significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.JOP: Journal of the pancreas 02/2009; 10(4):400-5.
