  • Article: Malignant melanoma of vagina--a case report.
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Malignant melanoma of vagina called mucosal lentigenous melanomas are extremely malignant. Malignant malanoma is a very rare tumour, it accounts for less than 3% of malignant tumours of vagina. Vaginal malanomas are aggressive and according to some authors they are less suitable for radical excision. Therefore wide local excision may be preferred. Multidisciplinary treatment modalities are required for more advanced lesions particularly in patients who have vaginal melanoma lesion more than 4 mm (AJCC stage IIB) in depth and high risk group.

  • Article: Role of cytology in diagnosis of soft tissue sarcomas with special reference to false positive cases
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Background: Histological diagnosis of soft tissue sarcomas is a difficult job not only for diverse architecture of different variants but also for variability in picture among different parts of a single tumor. Thus, cytodiagnosis of these tumors is one of the most challenging jobs. Aims: To evaluate the role of fine needle aspiration cytology in diagnosis of soft tissue malignancies and discuss the false-positive cases with particular reference to causes of misdiagnosis and possible ways of correction. Materials and Methods: In the present study, we used cytology for categorization of 59 soft tissue malignancies according to predominant cell type and also on the basis of differentiation. Results: Out of 59 cytodiagnosed malignant soft tissue tumors, 36 were classified as high grade and rest as low grade. Spindle cell sarcoma was the commonest diagnosis, followed by pleomorphic variant. Histological correlations were performed in 47 cases showing consistency in 41 cases. Rest six cases with disparity were further discussed to ascertain causes of failures and to chalk out possible plans to evade these pitfalls in future. Conclusions: Overall our study established the role of cytology in diagnosis of soft tissue sarcomas with good cytohistological correlation rate (87.2%).

  • Article: Primary pleomorphic sarcoma of the ovary with rhabdomyosarcomatous differentiation.
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: A 49-year-old patient presented with a right ovarian mass, which, on microscopy, showed to consist of haphazardly oriented large pleomorphic cells with abundant cytoplasm. Periodic acid Schiff stain was positive but negative with diastase digestion. Immunohistochemical staining with Desmin showed intense cytoplasmic positivity in almost all the cells. Cytokeratin, epithelial membrane antigen, smooth muscle actin, HMB-45, S-100 and neurone-specific enolase were negative. Immunohistochemical staining with Myogenin showed intense nuclear positivity. There was no other primary tumor on extensive search. A diagnosis of primary sarcoma of the ovary with rhabdomyosarcomatous differentiation was made. The incidence of similar tumors of the ovary are low and therefore little data are available on this uniformly lethal tumor. Thus, such cases need to be reported to pool experience so that the tumor can be diagnosed early.
