• Rational electoral cycles: evidence for the mineiros cities

  The aim of this paper is to test the hypothesis of rational electoral cycles in local elections of 2000 and 2004 in Minas Gerais. We use the theoretical model/empirical employed by Sakurai (2005) andThe aim of this paper is to test the hypothesis of rational electoral cycles in local elections of 2000 and 2004 in Minas Gerais. We use the theoretical model/empirical employed by Sakurai (2005) and originally proposed by Pettersson-Lidbom (2001). The results show that municipal expenditures are higher in election years and that there is evidence of electoral rational cycles in the 2000 elections, and in all elections of 2000 and 2004 for the voters of the left parties.

Our article shows that their results suffer from three limitations: (i) they are not robust to the most recent main database used; (ii) small changes in the time period of some variables change their results, and (iii) the authors’ econometric specification is not adequate to their hypothesis. Using a 2SLS specification we reconfirm the authors' hypothesis.

As informa��es s�cioecon�micas utilizadas s�o extra�das dos microdados de seis Pesquisas Nacional por Amostragem de Domic�lios do IBGE. As taxas de homic�dios s�o tabuladas a partir dos microdados do Sistema de Informa��es sobre Mortalidade do DATASUS. S�o empregadas t�cnicas econom�tricas que exploram a caracter�stica de painel das duas bases de dados constru�das, das quais utiliza vari�veis tabuladas por estado e per�odo e a outra por estado, per�odo e coorte. S�o realizados exerc�cios de decomposi��o das taxas de homic�dios em efeitos idade, per�odo e coorte e s�o estimados os determinantes econ�micos e demogr�ficos dessas taxas com base no modelo econ�mico do crime.
