  • Article: [Physical activity and sedentary behavior among adolescent high school students].
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: To identify the prevalence of factors associated with insufficient physical activity levels and sedentary behavior among adolescents. In this cross-sectional study 4,210 students (14-19 years old) attending public high-schools were selected using random two-stage cluster sampling. Data were collected by using the Global School-based Student Health Survey. Subjects who reported performing 60 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous physical activity five days a week or more were classified as physically active, while the remainder was classified as insufficiently active. Subjects who reported watching TV three or more hours a day were considered to be exposed to sedentary behavior. Analyses were carried out by using Chi-square tests and binary logistic regression. The prevalence of insufficiently active subjects was 65.1% (CI95% 63.7-66.6). Gender, place of residence (rural/urban), time of day attending school, occupational status, and enrollment in physical education were identified as factors significantly associated with exposure to insufficient levels of physical activity. Prevalence of exposure to sedentary behavior was 40.9% (CI95% 39.4-42.4) on week days and 49.9% (CI95% 48.4-51.4) on weekend days. Place of residence, time of day attending school, occupational status and enrollment in physical education were identified as factors significantly associated with exposure to sedentary behavior on week days, whereas on weekend days exposure to sedentary behavior was related to gender, age and time of day attending school. This study showed a high prevalence of insufficient physical activity levels and exposure to sedentary behaviors among adolescents.

Article: [Evaluation of the Academia da Cidade program to promote physical activity in Recife, Pernambuco State, Brazil: perceptions of users and non-users].
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to describe the profile of users and non-users of the Academia da Cidade Program to promote physical activity in Recife, Pernambuco State, Brazil. Four of the program's 19 units were sampled. Users (n=277) and non-users (n=277) were matched for gender, age (+/-5 years), and place of residence. Among non-users, 22% had never heard of the program. Among those who knew of the program, 54.3% learned about it by actually having seen one of the units. Among users, the main reason for participating in the program was to improve their health; mean participation time was 27.5 months (SD = 23.1); and 72.8% reported high satisfaction. The proportion of individuals with fair or poor self-rated health was significantly higher among non-users (45.4%) than users (28.5%). Users of the program appeared to be satisfied. Strategies to further publicize the program should be prioritized to make it known to a larger proportion of the city's population.

  • Article: [Religiousness, alcohol consumption and smoking in adolescence].
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: To analyze the association between religiousness and exposure to alcohol consumption and smoking in adolescence. The sample included 4 210 high-school students from state schools in Pernambuco, Brazil, selected through two-stage cluster sampling. Information was collected using the Global school-based student health survey (GSHS). Exposure to alcohol consumption and smoking was defined as consumption of either substance at least 1 day in the past 30 days, regardless of intensity. Religious affiliation and practice were analyzed as religiousness-related variables. The prevalence of exposure to alcohol consumption was 30.3% (95%CI: 28.9-31.7). Alcohol consumption was significantly higher in males (38.6%) than females (24.8%). The prevalence of exposure to smoking was 7.8% (IC 95%: 7.0-8.7), higher in males (9.8%) than females (6.2%). Crude analyses revealed that regardless of sex, exposure to alcohol consumption and smoking was inversely proportional to religious affiliation or practice. Logistic regression adjustment revealed that the likelihood of reporting exposure to alcohol consumption (OR = 0.71; 95%CI: 0.60-0.83) and smoking (OR = 0.61; 95%CI: 0,46-0,79) was lower in adolescents who reported religious practice, independently of affiliation. The present results suggest that religiousness may act as a modulator for the exposure to alcohol consumption and smoking in adolescence. Further studies should be carried out to analyze how the protective effect of religiousness can be enhanced through health interventions and campaigns.

    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to systematically review the Brazilian literature on the prevalence of obesity and associated factors in adolescents. The literature search was carried out in the electronic databases Pubmed and Bireme, using the keywords: obesity, overweight, BMI, adolescents and Brazil. The following inclusion criteria were considered: Brazilian adolescents, BMI-based obesity estimates, publication until 2007, and adequate methodology. After the examination of titles, abstracts and full texts, 27 papers fulfilled our inclusion criteria. For describing the studies, the following variables were used: type of survey, design, age range, sample size, place of data collection. For evaluating the evidence, the following indicators were used: methods used, independent variables studied, statistical analyses employed, and cut-off used for defining obesity. Most studies used cross-sectional designs (77.7%) and were carried out through home interviews (51.7%). Only one study used a nationally-based sample and three used regional-based samples (Northeast and Southeast). Regardless the design, place, type of survey, age range and cut-off used, the prevalence of obesity tended to be higher in the following groups: adolescents living in the Southeast region, living in urban areas, from high socioeconomic level and from private schools. In terms of behavioral determinants of obesity, the paucity of prospective studies and the difficulties of adequately measuring physical activity and food consumption, make the results less clear. Although the number of studies has increased, it is still necessary to stimulate surveys in the North, Southeast and Mideast regions. Prospective studies are also necessary, in order to evaluate the association between obesity and behavioral exposures.

  • Article: Physical activity in brazilian adolescents: a systematic review
    [show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The present study aims to review the literature on studies in the area of physical activity and sedentary behaviors in Brazilian adolescents. Systematic review of the literature. The search was carried out in electronic databases and references of the papers identifi ed. The following keywords, in English and Portuguese, were used: “exercise”, “physical effort”, “physical fitness”, “sports”, “motor activity”, “physical activity”, “energetic metabolism”, “health behavior”, “lifestyle”, “risk factors”, “adolescent”, “adolescence”, “youth”, and “students”. The electronic search resulted in 653 manuscripts. The process ofanalysis included examination of titles, abstracts and full texts. After all these phases, 15 papers fulfi lled the inclusion criteria of the review. In the references of these papers, six extra relevant publications were identifi ed, totalizing 21 papers. In terms of the design, only two studies used the case-control approach; all others were cross-sectional. Twelve studies were classifi ed as having an adequate sampling strategy, and presented a description of the sampling methods. A single study provided information on the quality of the measurements (validity) and previous testing of the instruments. Six studies included simultaneously measurements of physical activity and sedentary behaviors. There is a wide methodological variability across the national studies on physical activity and sedentary behavior. However, there is a homogeneity in the designs used, highlighting the need of longitudinal studies in the area.
