The effect of physical height on workplace success and income: preliminary test of a theoretical model.

ABSTRACT In this article, the authors propose a theoretical model of the relationship between physical height and career success. We then test several linkages in the model based on a meta-analysis of the literature, with results indicating that physical height is significantly related to measures of social esteem (rho =.41), leader emergence (rho =.24), and performance (rho =.18). Height was somewhat more strongly related to success for men (rho =.29) than for women (rho =.21), although this difference was not significant. Finally, given that almost no research has examined the relationship between individuals' physical height and their incomes, we present four large-sample studies (total N = 8,590) showing that height is positively related to income (beta =.26) after controlling for sex, age, and weight. Overall, this article presents the most comprehensive analysis of the relationship of height to workplace success to date, and the results suggest that tall individuals have advantages in several important aspects of their careers and organizational lives.

    ABSTRACT: Physical height is associated with beneficial outcomes for the tall individual (e.g., higher salary and likelihood of occupying a leadership position), presumably because being tall constituted an adaptive characteristic in ancestral societies. Although this account hinges on the presence of an evolved positive social-perceptual bias toward tall people, little direct evidence exists for this claim. Physical height literally implies the ability to reach higher, see further, and have greater overview; it also affords dominance, which others may equate with ability as well. Hence, leaders' physical height may be positively related to followers' belief that a leader has extraordinary talents, that is, charisma. However, because leadership positions were, in ancestral societies, occupied by males, an evolutionary perspective might further suggest that height is less relevant to followers' perceptions of female leaders. In line with this reasoning, the current study found a positive relationship between male leaders' height and their followers' perceptions of charisma, while no such relationship was found for female leaders.

    ABSTRACT: Physical size is related to status in many species – including humans – and may affect both real and perceived status. Here, we investigate the relationship between social status and assessments of physical size in humans. We distinguish between different aspects of physical size (height and muscularity) and different pathways to obtain status in groups with implications for the association between perceived status and perceived size. Across five(?) studies, we find that perceived height and muscularity are associated with status perception in different ways. Status obtained through coercion (dominance) differently affects size perception than status obtained through voluntary deference (prestige). In general, we find that adults positively associate height with both dominance and prestige, but that muscularity is more strongly related to dominance than prestige (2 studies, n = 76 and 121). Additionally, we find that children aged 6 to 12 (n= 57 and 237) also associate height and muscularity with high status based on dominance. However, the children differ from the adult samples in that they do not positively associate height with prestige. Finally, we find that adults associate perceived height and prestige-based status across several contexts, while muscularity is related to increased prestige only in a conflict situation but not in a peaceful/cooperation context (n = 415). Together these results shed light on how height and muscularity are used as cues to infer dominance and prestige-based status in different contexts, and how such associations develop across the lifespan.

    ABSTRACT: Across cultures, taller stature is linked to increased social status, but the potential reasons why this should be are unclear. One potential explanation is that taller individuals are more likely to win a dyadic confrontation with a competitor (i.e., they are more dominant), which leads to higher social rank. Although some previous studies have shown that perceptions of status or dominance are related to height, and are therefore consistent with such an explanation, there is surprisingly little research testing whether height actually has any influence on the behavioural outcomes in real-life social interactions. Here, we present three naturalistic observational studies demonstrating that height predicts interpersonal dominance during brief dyadic interactions. Study 1 investigated the likelihood of giving way in a narrow passage (N = 92); Study 2 investigated giving way in a busy shopping street, plus the likelihood of colliding with another individual (N = 1,108); and Study 3 investigated the likelihood of maintaining a linear path while walking, and potentially entering another individual's personal space (N = 1,056). We conclude that human height is positively related to interpersonal dominance, and may well contribute to the widely observed positive association between height and social status.
