Article: Contribución de la citología al diagnóstico de las enfermedades prostáticas del perro (Citology contribution to the prostatic diseases in the dog)

ABSTRACT: Ante signos clínicos de enfermedad prostática, la palpación rectal y la ecografía pueden ser limitados en su apreciación diagnóstica. La citología podría contribuir a demostrar el tipo de alteración prostática presente. El objetivo del trabajo fue evaluar la calidad de los extendidos realizados a partir del material obtenido por punción aspiración con aguja fina (PAAF) en próstatas de perros y reconocer las células para contribuir al conocimiento de la citología prostática. Se analizó un grupo de 20 perros adultos (G1), clínicamente sanos sin particularidades a la palpación rectal ni al examen ecográfico y otro grupo de 28 perros adultos con enfermedad prostática (G2). Se realizó PAAF de próstata, transabdominal, guiada por ecografía. Los extendidos se colorearon con May Grünwald Giemsa. En el 92 % de los casos se obtuvo material suficiente. La distribución y coloración celular fue adecuada para su reconocimiento. El G1 presentó eritrocitos, escasos leucocitos, células estromales y células epiteliales cúbicas (núcleos redondos u ovales, nucleolos pequeños, citoplasmas acidófilos) y columnares (cilíndricas, de núcleos basales, redondos u ovales, nucleolos pequeños, uniformes; citoplasmas acidófilos). En G2: la citología de quistes prostáticos no varió con respecto a una glándula normal. En las hiperplasias prostáticas se observó, en algunos extendidos, incremento en la celularidad, basofilia y vacuolización citoplasmática. En los procesos inflamatorios se observó: neutrófilos, células plasmáticas, linfocitos y macrófagos. Se diagnosticó un caso de neoplasia epitelial, con células atípicas. El método PAAF permite obtener material de calidad. Los cambios citológicos mas evidentes estuvieron relacionados a procesos inflamatorios agudos, crónicos y neoplásicos. Junto al examen clínico y ecográfico, la citología permitió realizar diagnósticos mas certeros. If there are clinical signs of prostatic diseases, the rectal palpation and ultrasonography are limited to aproximation diagnostic. The cytology would contribute to demostrate what type of prostatic disease is present. The objective of the work is the evaluation of the quality of smears obtained by fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) in dogs and to recognize the cells to contribute to the knowledge of prostatic cytology. There was one group: 20 healthy adult dogs, without particularities in rectal palpation (G1) with normal ultrasonographic images and a second group: 28 adult male dogs with prostatic disease (G2). Transabdominal FNAB of prostata with ultrasonographic guidance were performed according to Cowell’s et al. 1999. The smears were stained with May Grünwald Giemsa. In the 92% of cases the material obtained was enought to prepare two or more smears. The cells morphology was adecuate. In G1 there were erytrocytes, leucocytes, stromal, cuboidal (with round or oval nucleus; a single, small nucleolus; the cytoplasm was acidophylic) and columnar epithelial cells (cylindric cells that had basal, round or oval nucleus, low evident nucleolus and acidophylic cytoplasm). In G2 the prostatic cysts cytology was similar to normal cytology; in hiperplastic prostate there was in same slides a significant amounts of cells with citoplasmic basophilia and vacuolization. In inflammation processes the slides showed neutrophyls, plasmatic cells, linphocytes and macrophages. One case of epithelial neoplasia was diagnosed. Through the FNAB method we could obtain material of quality for prostatic cell recognition. The more evident changes in prostatic cytology were found in inflammatory and neoplastic process. With the clinical and ecographic evaluation the cytology allows a more precise diagnostic.REDVET. 01/2007;
