Y-chromosome STR haplotypes in a population sample from Switzerland (Zurich area).
ABSTRACT Allele frequencies and haplotypes for 12 Y-chromosome STR loci (DYS19, DYS385a/b, DYS389I, DYS389II, DYS390, DYS391, DYS392, DYS393, DYS437, DYS438 and DYS439), included in the PowerPlex Y multiplex kit, were determined for a Swiss population sample of 150 male individuals. The gene diversities for the different loci were in the same range as shown for other European Population samples. The haplotype diversity was 0.9922. Pairwise haplotype analysis showed no significant differences in comparison with other European Population samples.

ABSTRACT: In the present study Y-chromosomal short tandem repeat (Y-STR) haplotypes of 433 unrelated male individuals from southwest Germany (Freiburg area) were analyzed. Population data for the loci DYS19, 389I, 389II, 390, 391, 392, 393, 385 and YCA II are given. Analysis of these loci provides the data that is defined as the "extended haplotype" and is available in the on-line Y-STR haplotpye reference database (YHRD) at http://ystr.org. ABSTRACT: Previous studies of human Y-chromosomal single-nucleotide polymorphisms (Y-SNPs) established a link between the extant Y-SNP haplogroup distribution and the prehistoric demography of Europe. By contrast, our analysis of seven rapidly evolving Y-chromosomal short tandem repeat loci (Y-STRs) in over 12,700 samples from 91 different locations in Europe reveals a signature of more recent historic events, not previously detected by other genetic markers. Cluster analysis based upon molecular variance yields two clearly identifiable sub-clusters of Western and Eastern European Y-STR haplotypes, and a diverse transition zone in central Europe, where haplotype spectra change more rapidly with longitude than with latitude. This and other observed patterns of Y-STR similarity may plausibly be related to particular historical incidents, including, for example, the expansion of the Franconian and Ottoman Empires. We conclude that Y-STRs may be capable of resolving male genealogies to an unparalleled degree and could therefore provide a useful means to study local population structure and recent demographic history.Human Genetics 04/2005; 116(4):279-91. · 4.63 Impact Factor

ABSTRACT: The 17 Y chromosome STR loci DYS19, DYS385, DYS389I and II, DYS390, DYS391, DYS392, DYS393, DYS437, DYS438, DYS439, DYS460, DYS461, GATA C4, GATA H4 and GATA A10 were analyzed in a male sample of 126 unrelated individuals from Rio de Janeiro. No shared haplotypes were observed, demonstrating the usefulness and informative power of these Y-STRs in male lineage identification in Rio de Janeiro. Pairwise haplotype analysis showed no significant differences in the comparison of Rio de Janeiro with Iberian samples from different regions of Portugal and Spain, as well as with other Caucasian samples from South America, namely Costa Rica, Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Sao Paulo (Brazil). The same set of Y-STRs was also typed in 119 father/son pairs and among 2,023 allele transfers, 8 mutations were observed with an overall mutation rate of 0.003955+/-0.001396 per locus/meiosis across the 17 loci. Except in one case, all mutations were single step.
