ABSTRACT A systematic study of cation-pi interactions between alkali metal ions and the cyclopentadienyl ring of ferrocene is presented. The alkali metal (Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+) salts of the ditopic mono(pyrazol-1-yl)borate ligand [1,1'-fc(BMe2pz)2]2- crystallize from dimethoxyethane as multiple-decker sandwich complexes with the M+ ions bound to the pi faces of the ferrocene cyclopentadienyl rings in an eta5 manner (fc = (C5H4)2Fe; pz = pyrazolyl). X-ray crystallography of the lithium complex reveals discrete trimetallic entities with each lithium ion being coordinated by only one cyclopentadienyl ring. The sodium salt forms polyanionic zigzag chains where each Na+ ion bridges the cyclopentadienyl rings of two ferrocene moieties. Linear columns [-CpR-Fe-CpR-M+-CpR-Fe-CpR-M+-](infinity) (R = [-BMe2pz]-) are established by the K+, Rb+, and Cs+ derivatives in the solid state. According to DFT calculations, the binding enthalpies of M+-eta5(ferrocene) model complexes are about 20% higher as compared to the corresponding M+-eta6(benzene) aggregates when M+ = Li+ or Na+. For K+ and Rb+, the degree of cation-pi interaction with both aromatics is about the same. The binding sequence along the M+-eta5(ferrocene) series follows a classical electrostatic trend with the smaller ions being more tightly bound.

ABSTRACT: Exploring the co-complexation reactions between the gallium alkyl Ga(CH2SiMe3)3 and alkali-metal alkyl MCH2SiMe3 (M = Li, Na, or K) using an arene/hexane solvent mixture has allowed the isolation of solvent-free alkali-metal tetraorganogallates [{MGa(CH2SiMe3)4}∞] (M = Li, 1; Na, 2) and related benzene adduct [{(C6H6)2KGa(CH2SiMe3)4}∞] (3). By combining X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and DFT calculations, this study sheds new light on the constitution of these mixed-metal species. X-ray crystallographic studies reveal that all gallates exhibit novel polymeric arrangements, with 1 and 2 sharing the same linear chain structure, made up exclusively of M–C and Ga–C bonds, whereas 3 displays a significantly more open structural motif, where the K and Ga atoms are connected by a single alkyl bridge and propagation occurs via weaker K···Me electrostatic interactions of a methyl from a SiMe3 group of an alkyl ligand from one monomer to the potassium from a neighboring monomeric unit. Multinuclear NMR spectroscopic studies suggest that in deuterated benzene solutions 1–3 exist as discrete solvent-separated ion-pair species where the alkali-metal is solvated by the arene solvent. DFT calculations show that while the infinite aggregation of these polymeric structures is key for thermodynamically favoring the formation of 1 and 2, in the case of 3 the solvation of unsaturated potassium by two molecules of benzene, via π-electrostatic interactions, appears to be the major contributor to its overall stability.

ABSTRACT: The CSD study shows that 46.8% of ferrocene (Fc) containing crystal structures form a ferrocene–ferrocene dimer (FcD). In all those 2120 structures the FcD exhibits very similar geometry. An outstanding electrostatic complementarity between the Fc units within the dimer explains very frequent formation and constrained geometry of this building block.

ABSTRACT: To probe the structural effects of Group 1 (M = Na, K) and Group 14 (El = Ge(II), Sn(II)) ions on adducts between MCp and MEI((OBu)-Bu-t)(3) salts, the metal ions were systematically varied and the solid-state structures of the adducts were studied by single-crystal X-ray methods. KCp maintained its undulating chain structure, albeit decorated with isolated K(THF)(2)Sn((OBu)-Bu-t)(3) units. The initially-linear NaCp chain, however, became intercalated with MEI((OBu)-Bu-t)(3) moieties, and the ensuing polymer adopted a zigzag-chain structure. A mixture of KCp and NaGe((OBu)-Bu-t)(3) underwent an ion exchange to give NaCp and KGe((OBu)-Bu-t)(3), revealing that tridentate [Ge((OBu)-Bu-t)(3)]- prefers the larger potassium ion to sodium ion.
