[Show abstract][Hide abstract] ABSTRACT: As an integral member of the health-care team, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) brings a unique knowledge and set of skills to
the management of specialized health problems. In the 1960s, the NP role was developed as a needful response to the precarious
shortage of trained primary health-care clinicians in the workforce. With an emphasis on primary care, the NP role functioned
to provide well-child care and address common childhood health problems for select underserved populations (Silver 1967).
The decade that followed supported the impetus of equal access to health care for all and substantiated the need for a greater
influx of primary care providers. During this period of time, NP training programs grew both in number and educational requisites.
