Addressing media stigma for people experiencing mental illness using an entertainment-education strategy

ABSTRACT This study examines the effects of Entertainment-Education strategy on knowledge acquisition about schizophrenia and stigma reduction, using pretest posttest control group and 2 X 3 (advocate's perspective X message style) between-subjects factorial design. Participants watched an accurate and empathetic movie portrayal of schizophrenia, followed by an educational trailer. Participants (N= 165) were randomly assigned to one of eight conditions (six manipulated conditions, control, a group who watched a trailer prior to the movie). Results showed that viewing an accurate and empathetic movie portrayal increased knowledge. The educational trailer increased not only knowledge acquisition but influenced stigma reduction. Structural equation modeling analysis revealed that entertainment and educational value of the movie mediated stigma reduction. Implications of this study to the mental health research and the design of Entertainment-Education contents are discussed.

    ABSTRACT: Unterhaltungsmedien wie Filme oder TV-Serien beeinflussen in starkem Maße das öffentliche Bild von Personen mit Krankheiten oder Behinderungen. Zweifellos problematisch ist, dass diese Personengruppen überwiegend unrealistisch und auf eine eher stigmatisierende Weise portraitiert werden. In diesem Beitrag systematisieren wir den Forschungsstand zum Potenzial unterhaltsamer Medienangebote zur Stigmatisierung oder Destigmatisierung von Menschen mit Krankheit und Behinderung. Wir diskutieren Grundannahmen und Wirkungsmechanismen für derartige Medieneffekte und geben einen Einblick in die Ergebnisse eigener Untersuchungen.

    ABSTRACT: Aim. This study investigates the impact of watching a movie about schizophrenia on recipients’ attitudes towards affected individuals. Background. Media portrayals of mental health problems are known to shape public attitudes about mental illness (e.g., Maier et al., 2013). Relatively little is known about the role of movies in this process, and particularly about the importance of narrative-specific processes such as transportation into a story (e.g., Green & Brock, 2000) and viewers’ enjoyment (e.g., Oliver & Bartsch, 2010). Method. Thirty-one female students (M = 22.4 years, SD = 2.54) watched a movie about a person with schizophrenia. Participants’ social distancing and attitudes toward individuals with mental health problems were assessed one week before watching the movie, directly after watching it, and one week later using standardised scales (Angermeyer & Matschinger, 1995; Angermeyer et al., 2003). Narrative engagement (Busselle & Bilandzic, 2009), enjoyment, and appreciation (Oliver & Bartsch, 2010) were measured directly after watching the movie. Twenty students who did not watch the movie served as control group (M = 23.8 years, SD = 3.26). Results. Analyses did not show significant difference between experimental and control group, and also no changes in social distance or attitudes within the experimental group. Narrative engagement and enjoyment, however, influenced changes in benevolence within this group. Conclusion. Findings indicate that not only the accuracy of the depicted content, but particularly the narrative processes triggered by it are critical to understand the potential of movies to alter attitudes towards individuals with mental illness.
