The impact of a herbal extract with excitatory modulator activity in the management of asthma was studied. An open and selective 3-year follow-up of 14 chronic refractory asthmatics aged between 22 and 70 was used. Participants received an extract of Sophora flavescens Ait. Medication use, a diary card of symptoms and respiratory function were recorded. The study was retrospective and all patients gave written informed consent. The quality of life, clinical symptoms and respiratory function improved during all periods of measurement. The use of inhaled corticosteroid and beta-agonists were reduced or eliminated. There were no significant adverse reactions reported. Therefore the extract of S. flavescens as an excitatory modulator appears to be a safe and may be an effective alternative treatment for refractory chronic asthma.

Curative therapies for these diseases are not available. There are also significant concerns regarding the potential side effects from the chronic use of conventional drugs such as corticosteroids, especially in children. Many patients with chronic allergic conditions seek complementary and alternative medicine therapies including traditional Chinese medicines. This trend has begun to attract interest from mainstream health care providers and scientific investigators and has stimulated government agencies in the United States to provide support and guidance for the scientific investigation of complementary and alternative medicine. This effort may lead to improved therapies and better health care/patient outcomes. This review presents an update on the most promising Chinese herbal remedies for asthma and food allergy.

[Show abstract][Hide abstract] ABSTRACT: Matrine extraction using reverse micelles of a non-ionic trialkyl phosphine oxide (TRPO) surfactant was studied. Theoretical analysis and experimental results showed that the driving forces for the extraction are the coordination forces between matrines and TRPOs. Oxymatrine and oxysophocarpine cannot form coordination bonds with TRPO, and therefore, they can be separated with matrine from a raw matrine solution. The effect of several important factors such as pH, W0, and co-solvent on the partition coefficient of matrine was studied. The presence of ions in the system did not affect the partition coefficient significantly. Under the optimum operating conditions, determined by orthogonal experiments, the yield of matrine from the raw matrine solution can reach 70%; the purity of the matrine is higher than 90%. The mass transfer coefficient for both forward and back extraction was calculated and compared with that for reverse micellar extraction of proteins reported in the literature. This paper ends with a discussion of the kinetics of the extraction.

[Show abstract][Hide abstract] ABSTRACT: Although corticosteroids and beta(2)-agonists are effective in managing asthma symptoms, a curative therapy for asthma is lacking. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), used in Asia for centuries, is beginning to play a role in Western health care as a complementary and alternative medicine modality. There is increasing scientific evidence supporting the use of TCM for asthma treatment.
This review article discusses promising TCM interventions for asthma and explores their possible mechanisms of action.
We first reviewed 5 clinical studies of antiasthma TCM herbal remedies published between 2005 and 2007. We then summarized possible mechanisms underlying their effects on the basis of data in the original articles, published abstracts, and available databases. Possible mechanisms include anti-inflammation, inhibition of airway smooth muscle contraction, and immunomodulation. Research on TCM herbal therapy for food allergy is rare, and we therefore focused on the effect and mechanism of action of food allergy herbal formula-2 on a murine model of peanut allergy and preliminary clinical study results.
Evidence from clinical studies supports beneficial effects of TCM herbal therapy on asthma. A number of mechanisms may be responsible for efficacy of these agents. Strong preclinical study data suggest the potential efficacy of food allergy herbal formula-2 for food allergy.
