ABSTRACT Septicaemia by clostridia is a rare but nearly always fatal disease. We report a case of mortal massive haemolysis, with virtually no circulating erythrocytes, in a patient with septicaemia by Clostridium perfringens. The early finding of Clostridium perfringens in the direct Gram stain of patient's peripheral blood allowed a quick diagnosis.
