Output-coupling-dependent polarization state of a continuous-wave Yb: YCa4O(BO3)(3) laser

High-power continuous-wave laser operation was demonstrated with a y-cut Yb:YCa(4)O(BO(3))(3) crystal, showing critical dependence on the output coupler used. Polarized laser oscillation with E||x was obtained at 1085.6 nm by using a coupler of 0.5% transmission, yielding an output power of 7.3 W with an optical-to-optical efficiency of 63%. Higher output couplings (>/=2%) led to polarized oscillation with E||z at laser wavelengths </= 1055.5 nm, the highest output power was 6.5 W. Dual-wavelength operation in the two polarization states was realized with a coupler of 1% transmission, the output powers for the two orthogonal polarizations were 3.15 W at 1084.3 nm (E||x) and 3.45 W at 1061.3 nm (E||z). The slope efficiency for output couplers with transmission in the 0.5%-2% range was 81%-83%.

    ABSTRACT: Efficient high-power continuous-wave laser operation is demonstrated with Yb:YCa4O(BO3)3 crystals cut along the X, Y, and Z principal axes, end pumped by a high-power diode. Highest output powers of 6.3–7.3W are generated, with slope efficiencies in the range of 73–83%. The standard behavior characterized by fixed linear polarization of the output and decreasing oscillation wavelength when increasing the output coupling was observed only for the X-cut crystal; the Y-cut crystal led to the polarization state changing and coexistence, while the Z-cut crystal resulted in dual-band laser operation with a fixed polarization state.

    ABSTRACT: Spectroscopic properties and continuous-wave laser performance of a new Yb(0.009):Y(0.575)Gd(0.416)VO(4) mixed vanadate crystal are reported. Purely sigma-polarized laser oscillation at 1013-1009.5 nm, with quantum defect lower than 3%, is demonstrated at room temperature in free running mode under diode pumping, producing an output power of 1.55 W with optical-to-optical and slope efficiencies of 19% and 32%, respectively. At longer wavelengths where the pi-polarized oscillation exhibited higher gain, the output power reached 2.5 W, with a slope efficiency of 41%.

    ABSTRACT: We report distinct laser performance of Yb:GdCa(4)O(BO(3))(3) crystals cut along different principal optical axes using an unpolarized diode pump. The continuous-wave (cw) laser oscillation generated with y-cut crystal is polarized either with E parallel x or with E parallel z depending on the output coupling (T) utilized; a specific T=3% leads to a special situation in which the two orthogonal polarization states coexist oscillating at different wavelengths. The laser oscillation achieved with x- and z-cut crystals is also polarized, but with a fixed polarization of E parallel z and E parallel x, respectively. The most efficient laser operation is obtained with the y-cut crystal, generating a cw output power of 7.35 W at 1083-1085 nm with an optical-to-optical efficiency of 63%, the slope efficiency being as high as 84%.
