Article: Uterus-like mass replacing ovary: report of a new entity.
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: A unique, uterus-like ovarian mass with central endometriosis was studied. A 31-year-old woman with a ten-year history of endometriosis of the left ovary had surgically excised a left ovarian mass with a central cavity that was lined by endometriotic tissue, which was surrounded in turn by a very thick wall of smooth-muscle cells that contained a scanty amount of collagen. The general architecture of the mass simulated that of a uterus. The tentative hypothesis is that the present mass was the end result of an intensive and complete transition of the ovarian stromal cells into smooth-muscle fibers.Archives of pathology & laboratory medicine 11/1981; 105(10):508-11. · 2.58 Impact Factor -
Article: Uterus-like mass arising in the broad ligament: a metaplasia or mullerian duct anomaly?
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: A 46-year-old woman presented with a large abdominopelvic mass. Exploration revealed a large cystic mass that arose from the posterior leaf of the right broad ligament. The mass was lined by endometrial-like tissue and had an outer layer of smooth muscle that resembled myometrium. The inner wall was focally composed of a thick layer of intermixed smooth muscle and endometrial glands comparable to adenomyosis. This is the fourth reported case of "a uterus-like mass" and the first that is clearly extraneous to the ovary. We hypothesize that these masses may arise from subperitoneal mesenchymal cells that retain the ability to duplicate mullerian duct structures; other cases may represent mullerian duct fusion defects.International Journal of Gynecological Pathology 08/1997; 16(3):279-81. · 1.45 Impact Factor -
Article: Uterus-like mass of the small bowel mesentery.
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: A case of a uterus-like mass arising from the mesentery is reported. A mass measuring 14x11 cm was noted in the small bowel mesentery of a 59-year-old woman. Histologically, the lesion consisted of endometrial-type and fallopian tube-type mucosa surrounded by thick bundles of smooth muscle cells. Since the first report by Cozzutto in 1981, 10 cases of uterus-like mass, that included seven ovarian and three extraovarian cases, have been reported. To our knowledge, the present lesion was the first case originating from the mesenteric region. Three hypotheses of this rare lesion: (i) congenital anomaly; (ii) metaplasia; and (iii) heterotopia theories are reviewed.Pathology International 02/2000; 50(1):76-80. · 1.62 Impact Factor
