A STUDY ON FORREST GUMP’S STRUGGLE REFLECTED IN THE MOTION PICTURE IN “FORREST GUMP”
Literature may become an interesting subject because the audiences can understand and imagine what the author said. Through studying literature, we can get enjoyment, delight, and satisfaction. In literature especially film, someone can enter a new world of experience that she never has before. In this thesis, the writer focuses on the struggles of Forrest Gump, the main character, in the motion picture in “FORREST GUMP”. More specifically, this study deals with two problems: How Forrest Gump struggle to get Jenny’s love and what the effects of Forrest Gump’s struggles are on his personality. The objectives of this study are: to know the ways of Forrest Gump struggles to get Jenny’s love and to know the effects of his struggles on his personality. This thesis used descriptive qualitative method because there was no treatment as in experimental research. This thesis just described or interpreted the condition or situation. The writer used objective approach in doing the analysis because the writer did not need to study the author’s life, the background of the work, and the background of society, but she just analyzed the work itself. The result of the analysis showed that Forrest Gump has done two kinds of struggles to get Jenny’s love. First, he struggles physically by fighting with Billy, with some men at the club, and with Wesley (Jenny’s lover). Second, he has doing psychological struggle by being patient to get Jenny’s love. His patience can be seen from the fact that Jenny has refused his expression of love for many times. However, he never surrendered to get her love and married her. Furthermore, his struggles have given some positive effects on his personality. Forrest can build his own self-confidence and be more independence. Through his mental development, at the last he can be a successful shrimp businessman.
