Depression has been associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk, and a depression-related elevation of high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) has been proposed as a possible mechanism. The objective of this paper is to examine association between depression and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP).
. Subjects consisted of 508 healthy adults (mean age 48.5 years; 49% women, 88% white) residing in central Massachusetts. Data were collected at baseline and at quarterly intervals over a one-year period per individual. Multivariable linear mixed models were used to assess the association for the entire sample and by gender.
. The mean Beck Depression Inventory score was 5.8 (standard deviation (SD) 5.4; median 4.3), and average serum hs-CRP was 1.8 mg/L (SD 1.7; median 1.2). Results from the multivariable linear mixed models show that individuals with higher depression scores have higher levels of hs-CRP. Analyses by gender show persistence of an independent association among women, but not among men. Body mass index (BMI = weight(kg)/height(m)
) appears to be a partial mediator of this relationship.
. Depression score was correlated to hs-CRP levels in women. Further studies are required to elucidate the biological mechanisms underlying these associations and their implications.

    ABSTRACT: Aim To investigate the association between depression, metabolic syndrome (MBS), somatic, particularly cardiovascular comorbidity, and low-grade chronic inflammation assessed using C-reactive protein (CRP). Methods This cross-sectional study included 76 patients with recurrent depressive disorder (RDD) and 72 non-depressed medical staff controls from the Department of Psychiatry, University Hospital Center Zagreb between January 2011 and June 2012. Results Seventy-five percent of patients had somatic comorbidity. The most common comorbid conditions were cardiovascular disorders (46.1%), locomotor system diseases (35.5%), carcinoma (15.8%), thyroid diseases (9.2%), and diabetes (9.2%). MTB was more common in RDD patients (31.6%) than in controls (23.6%), but the difference was not significant. Elevated CRP was found to be significantly more frequent in patients with recurrent depressive disorders (RDD) (35.5%; χ2 test, P = 0.001, Cramer V = 0.29) than in controls (12.5%) and was associated with lowered high-density lipoprotein and overweight/obesity. Conclusion We found some intriguing links between stress, depression, metabolic syndrome, and low grade inflammation, which may be relevant for the prevalence of somatic comorbidity in patients with RDD, but further studies are needed to confirm our results.

    ABSTRACT: Prior studies indicate that the biochemical alterations of depressive episodes result in decreased serum zinc concentrations. Given these findings, it is plausible that consistently low dietary zinc intakes contribute to depressive symptoms, yet epidemiological data are lacking. The authors tested the hypothesis that low zinc intake is associated with depressive symptoms using cross-sectional data from the population-based Boston Area Community Health survey (2002-2005). Dietary and supplement use data were collected by validated food frequency questionnaire. Current depressive symptoms were assessed by the abridged validated Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale and analyzed using multivariate logistic regression, adjusting for sociodemographic, health and lifestyle characteristics. Results showed an interaction (P=0.03) with gender, whereby zinc was associated with depressive symptoms in women (N=2163), but not men (N=1545). Women with low dietary or supplemental zinc intake were more likely to have depressive symptoms (e.g., dietary zinc quartile 1 vs. 4, OR=1.76, 95% CI: 1.26, 2.45; P-trend=0.004; supplemental zinc P-trend=0.03). Associations were stronger among women using antidepressant medications (e.g., total zinc OR=4.75, 95% CI: 1.98, 11.4; P-trend=0.0005). The cross-sectional, observational nature of the study leaves uncertain whether the observed associations represent actual causal relationships between zinc intake and depressive symptoms. These findings suggest: (1) gender-specific pathophysiological mechanisms of depression, (2) inadequate dietary zinc intake contributes to depressive symptoms in women, and (3) supplemental zinc is a beneficial adjunct to antidepressant therapy in women. Additional research on both men and women is needed to verify these novel findings. If confirmed by other studies, the potential importance of adequate zinc intake is underscored by the recognized limitations of pharmacotherapy for depression.

    ABSTRACT: Our objective was to reveal the contribution of preoperative high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) levels to the risk of depression in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). In this study, 232 consecutive patients undergoing elective CABG were evaluated for depression utilizing the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire scale at least 3 days before surgery and 6 months after CABG. In addition, peripheral blood samples were collected at baseline and the circulation levels of hsCRP were measured. The preoperative and postoperative rate of depression was 18.1%. Interestingly, preoperative depression was independently associated with women (odds ratio [OR], 2.49; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.13-5.50) and log-transformed hsCRP (OR, 1.16; 95% CI, 1.06-1.27) after adjusting for various factors using logistic regression, including age, sex, and university-level education. Postoperative depression was only associated with log-transformed hsCRP (OR, 1.15; 95% CI, 1.05-1.25) in these patients. Log-transformed hsCRP remained associated with future depression after adjusting for postoperative medications or major adverse cardiovascular events during the follow-up period. The present study is the first to report elevated serum hsCRP is an independent predictor for depression in CABG patients not only preoperatively but also up to 6 months after surgery. These clinical findings may reveal a potential target for improving prognosis in CABG patients with depression.
