Fifteen medicinal plant extracts were investigated for: total phenolic content and free radical scavenging effect by DPPH and ABTS assays; anti-lipid peroxidation activity by TBARS; and for antiglycation activity. The results revealed that the total phenolic content showed good correlation with free radical scavenging by ABTS (r = 0.721) and anti-lipid peroxidation by TBARS (r = -0.659), but showed no correlation with antiglycation. Three extracts from Tamarindus indica, Camellia sinensis and Artocarpus lakoocha demonstrated a significant antioxidant effect, and also showed a promising antiglycation effect. The IC50 (mg/ml) were 0.9-0.16 for the DPPH method; TEAC values (mg Trolox/mg sample) of 1.72-2.83 for the ABTS method; IC50 (mg/ml) of 0.64-1.22 for the TBARS method; and IC50 ranging from 0.01 to 3.20 for the antiglycation method. These three herbs were found to possess effective antioxidant and antiglycation activities, and could be further developed for use in anti-aging cosmetics.

    ABSTRACT: Although the genus Limonium was widely used in traditional medicine, few studies have focused on the biological capacities of different species of this group. In this study, biological activities of hexanic, dichloromethane, ethanolic, and methanolic extracts, related to their phenolic contents, and HPLC phytochemical analysis of the halophyte Limonium densiflorum were investigated on human cell lines and murine macrophages. The evaluation of the antioxidant capacities using oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC method), superoxide anion scavenging activity and a cell based-assay (WS-1), showed that shoot methanol extract exhibited the highest antioxidant activity. Moreover, this extract demonstrated the best anti-inflammatory activity, inhibiting NO release by 80% at 160 μg/ml in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7. The dichloromethane extract displayed the highest anticancer activity against human lung carcinoma (A-549) and colon adenocarcinoma cell lines (DLD-1) with IC50 values of 29 and 85 μg/mL, respectively. The estimation of phenolic content showed that methanolic and ethanolic extracts had the highest amounts (56.1 and 48.1 mg EGA/g DW, respectively). The identification of phenolic compounds in methanolic extract of the plant, using RP-HPLC, revealed that trans 3-hydroxycinnamic acid, myricetin and isorhamnetin were the major molecules present which may be responsible for the biological activities of the species. Results obtained indicated that L. densiflorum extracts can be used potentially as a readily accessible and valuable bioactive source of natural products.

    ABSTRACT: Background Extracts from Polygonum senegalensis (Polygonaceae) and Pseudocedrela kotschyi (Meliaceae) are two important traditionally used medicinal plants in rural Benin to treat many diseases and notably type 2 diabetes. The aim of the study was to investigate the α-glucosidase inhibition, antioxidant and antibacterial activities of those plants extract: Polygonum senegalensis leaves, and Pseudocedrela kotschyi root. Methods Hydro-alcoholic (50%) extracts were analyzed for their phytochemical content and tested for their inhibition potency on α-glucosidase from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Antioxidant activities were assessed using the DPPH, ORAC, FRAP and DCFH-DA (cell based) assay. Finally, the antibacterial activity was evaluated using MIC determination on four Gram-positive cocci (Bacillus subtilis, Clostridium difficile, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus), three Gram-negative bacilli (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae), and the yeast Candida albicans. Results Each extract presented significant α-glucosidase inhibition and antioxidant activities. Polygonum senegalensis leaf extracts were the most active in each in vitro assay with an IC50 = 1.5 μg/ml for α-glucosidase inhibition and an IC50 = 6.8 μg/ml for DPPH scavenging, - 4.5 μmol Fe II/g of dry matter - 9366 μmol Trolox / g DW - for FRAP and ORAC values, respectively. IC50 = 2.3 μg GA / ml for DCFH-DA assay. Concerning its antibacterial activity, a growth inhibitory effect was observed only against three Gram negative bacilli: B. subtilis, E. faecalis, S. aureus and the yeast C. albicans at high concentration. Conclusion The results showed that the semi alcoholic extract of the two studied plants possess α-glucosidase inhibitory activity, antioxidant potency, and low antibacterial effect.

    ABSTRACT: The present study investigates a concentration-dependent assessment of scavenging property and antioxidant activity in the extracts of Emblica officinalis Gaertn. syn. Phyllanthus emblica L. fruit using various in vitro assays. A correlation of aqueous and ethanolic extract of Emblica fruit along with different known standards for its antioxidative properties was made by performing assays like TPC, RP, TAC, DPPH FRAP and HRSA. Both the aqueous and ethanolic extract of fruit showed high phenolic content beside strong reducing power and free radical scavenging capacity. The hydroxyl radical scavenging potential of aqueous extract was higher compared to ethanolic extract. A high positive correlation was observed among the in vitro assays for the antioxidative properties except for HRS assay which showed negative corelation. Our finding not only tots up the results related to antioxidant asset of amla fruit but also emphasizes the fact of its usefulness as chemopreventive and/or chemotherapeutic importance. Further studies are warranted to explore the constituents responsible for the antioxidant property and other pharmacological activities.
