Abstract

The aim of this paper is to test the hypothesis of rational electoral cycles in local elections of 2000 and 2004 in Minas Gerais. We use the theoretical model/empirical employed by Sakurai (2005) and originally proposed by Pettersson-Lidbom (2001). The results show that municipal expenditures are higher in election years and that there is evidence of electoral rational cycles in the 2000 elections, and in all elections of 2000 and 2004 for the voters of the left parties.
