Genetic Algorithms for Better Turbo Codes

ABSTRACT Throughout the past decade, the discovery of turbo codes has been considered as one of the most successful researches whose impact significantly enhanced the quality of modern communication systems. To obtain an excellent performance, it is necessary to design robust turbo code interleaver. In the recent time, there were several attempts to apply genetic algorithms to improve the performance of turbo codes by optimization of the interleaver. This paper investigates the optimization of turbo code interleaver with free distance as a fitness function.

    ABSTRACT: Since them appearance in 1993, the turbo codes gives first best approaching to the Shannon limit, and a new direction for the channel encoding field, especially since they were adopted for multiple norms of telecommunications, such as deeper communication. To obtain an excellent performance it is necessary to design robust turbo code interleaver. We are investigating genetic algorithms as a promising optimization method to find good performing interleaver for the larger frame sizes. In this paper, we present our work, compare with several previous approaches and present some experimental results.

    ABSTRACT: In the matter of channel coding and spectral efficiency, up to the invention of turbo codes, 3 dB or more stood between what the theory promised and what real systems were able to offer. This gap has now been removed, allowing communication systems to be designed with quasi-optimum performance. Ten years after the first publication on this new technique, turbo codes have commenced their practical service.
