ABSTRACT The present study aims for the characterization of the hydrogeological parameters of the Paleogenic fluvial deposits ofVolta Redonda Geological Basin, through hydraulic conductivity determinations and grain sized analyses. The overall goalwas to produce a hydrogeological data base applicable to the characterization of hydrofacies (interconnected sedimentarybodies with distinct hydraulic properties) and the modeling groundwater flow. The used methods used consisted of in situpermeability determinations (Guelph permeameters) and laboratory tests (variable head permeameter), besides grain sizeanalyses carried out in each sedimentary facies in the study area. These sedimentary facies were characterized by Marques(2006) and belong to the Resende and Pinheiral formations. The permeameter results were coherent to the sedimentologicalcharacteristics. The Resende Formation sedimentary deposits are constituted by medium to fine sand with presence of argillaceousmatrix and present moderate to very low hydraulic conductivity, varying between 10-4 to 10-8 cm/s, which indicatesa poor reservoir. The Pinheiral Formation presents sandy layers with conglomeratic lenses, limited by small thickness peliticintervals, with a very low permeability, with a hydraulic conductivity varying between 10-5 to 10-7 cm/s. The upper layer hasthe maximum permeability, around 10-3 cm/s. This formation presents a medium reservoir characteristics and it must be takeninto consideration that the upper layer has as role in recharge to the aquifer. From the results of hydraulic conductivity, thatvaries from 10-8 to 10-3 cm/s for the Resende and Pinheiral formations, it is concluded that these deposits a low to mediumhydraulic conductivity, explaining the low productivity of the water-bearing multilayered aquifer of Volta Redonda Basin.

ABSTRACT: THE BRASILIANO OROGENY AT THE CENTRAL SEGMENT OF RIBEIRA BELT, BRAZIL The structure of the central segment of the Ribeira belt is defined by three large thrust sheets (Lower, Intermediate and Upper) which override the autochthonous domain, towards the southern portion of the São Francisco Craton. Four lithotectonic associations are individualized within the domains: basement rocks (pré-1,8 Ga rocks); orthogneisses of unknown age; Post-1,8 Ga metasedimentary cover and Brasiliano granitoid rocks. Continental tholeiitic deformed dykes and disrupted lenses within the cover indicate exten- sional periods. Investigation of the tectono-metamorphic and magmatic aspects, associated with new U/Pb geocronological data support the subdivision of Brasiliano Orogeny within three main tectonic periods: a) the syn-collisional period (590-563 Ma) is represented by the main deformation (D1+2), coeval with the MI metamorphic stage and γl -γ3 granitoid rocks. Crustal shortening took place initially through ductile thrusts and tight recumbent folds. The late stage of this collisional event is characterized by oblique convergence, with pervasive deformation throughout the belt. MI had its thermal peak during D2, and is characterised by interme- diate to high pressures. The spatial distribution of the metamorphic zones defines an inverted gradient. Defor- med I and S type granitoid rocks occur during this period, b) the post-collisional period (535-520 Ma) is characterized by D3 deformation, coeval with M2 metamorphic stage. During DS phase, the oblique convergen- ce continued, but was accomodated by late to post-metamorphic peak strike slip ductile shear zones. Between these shear zones, shortening was achieved by steep folding of S2 foliation. The Ma stage with lower pressure regime is associated with intense melting of the basement and the cover, resulting in the generation of I-type magmatism and subordinated S-type; and c) the post-tectonic period is represented by the Post-D4 γ5 mag- matism registered between 503 to 492 Ma. This magmatism may be related to melting of crustal rocks associated with mantelic contribution related with high temperature conditions and uplift just after the Brasiliano Orogeny.

ABSTRACT: Ground penetrating radar (GPR) has proved to be an extremely useful geophysical tool, in conjunction with direct geological data, to develop a realistic, macroscopic, subjective-based conceptual model of aquifer architecture within a shallow coastal alluvial plain. Subsequent finite-difference groundwater modelling has not only enabled determination of the dominant groundwater flow paths for the plain, but has also quantified the effects of within-facies and between-facies sedimentary heterogeneity on those flow paths. The interconnection of narrow, unconfined alluvial channels and a broad, semi-confined alluvial delta is ensuring that most fresh groundwater that enters the plain in the form of precipitation or recharge from lateral bedrock hills, is discharged into the eastern coastal wetlands via that alluvial delta aquifer.

ABSTRACT: The flow of ponded water into and through the unsaturated zone depends on both the saturated and unsaturated components of the hydraulic conductivity. Recent studies indicate that the ratio of the saturated (K{sub fs}) to the unsaturated (Ï{sub m}) components (K{sub fs}/Ï{sub m} = α{sup *}) of flow lies within prescribed bounds for most field soils, i.e., 1m⁻¹ ⤠α{sup *} ⤠100 m⁻¹. In addition, the fact that the calculation of K{sub fs} and Ï{sub m} when using the constant head well permeameter technique. As a consequence, measurement of the steady flow rate using only one ponded head may be all that is necessary for many practical applications. Multiple head measurements or independent measurements of α{sup *} or Ï{sub m} can be used, however, to give more accurate estimates of K{sub fs} if required.
