Empowerment of the American NCO.
Empowerment in today’s military is an essential part of the Non Commissioned Officer (NCO) Corp. In American military history the empowerment of the Non Commissioned officer has drastically changed since the Vietnam War era to the current conflict of Global War on Terrorism with Operation Iraq Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. The knowledge of the NCO has been the key to the success of many battles and conflicts over time. This paper will focus on the empowerment of the NCO and how it has changed since the Vietnam War and transitioning through Desert Storm and Desert Shield and concluding with the current conflict of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. We will also examine the thought as to whether we have fully prepared our NCO Corp for the additional responsibility that comes with knowledge and power.
