Uterine leiomyoma in a Guyanese squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus sciureus).

ABSTRACT An adult female squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) presented with a 3.0 x 2.5 cm firm mass palpable within the caudal abdomen. Differentiation of the organs or structures involved with the mass could not be achieved with radiography or ultrasonography. Exploratory laparotomy revealed a mass within the lumen of the uterus; the mass was removed by partial hysterectomy. On gross examination, the mass was a focally extensive, unencapsulated, firm, solitary tumor. Histologic examination revealed that the mass was composed of interlacing bundles of smooth muscle cells with little fibrous stroma. The cells were elongated with poorly delineated borders and cigar-shaped nuclei, each containing a single, small nucleolus. Fewer than 1 mitosis per 20 high-power (magnification, x 400) fields were present. These gross and histologic findings supported a diagnosis of uterine leiomyoma. Although leiomyomas are the most common tumor of the reproductive tract in nonhuman primates, to our knowledge the current lesion is the first uterine leiomyoma reported to occur in a squirrel monkey.

    ABSTRACT: Uterine leiomyomata are common, affecting 70-80% of women between 30 and 50 years of age. Leiomyomata have been reported for a variety of primate species, although prevalence rates and treatments have not been widely reported. The prevalence, diagnosis, and treatment of uterine leiomyomata in the Alamogordo Primate Facility and the Keeling Center for Comparative Medicine and Research were examined. Uterine leiomyomata were diagnosed in 28.4% of chimpanzees with an average age at diagnosis of 30.4 ± 8.0 years. Advanced age (>30 years) was related to an increase in leiomyomata and use of hormonal contraception was related to a decrease in leiomyomata. As the captive chimpanzee population ages, the incidence of leiomyomata among female chimpanzees will likely increase. The introduction of progesterone-based contraception for nonbreeding research and zoological chimpanzees may reduce the development of leiomyomata. Finally, all chimpanzee facilities should institute aggressive screening programs and carefully consider treatment plans.

    ABSTRACT: Caspian red deer or maral (Cervus elaphus maral) is the largest type of deer in Iran. Maral in the past has lived in the north forests of Iran from the Caspian Sea coast, Alborz Mountains Chain and oak forest of Zagros margin from the Azerbaijan up to Fars Province. But the generation of them was completely destroyed in the North West and West of Iran. According to reports about 50 years ago, they have been observed in Arasbaran forests and now a days populations of this species live in protected areas and out of reach of humans. Initially in 1973 Semeskande Wildlife Refuge with 13 an area of 1041 acres was placed under the protection then in Act No.63 in 1975 was introduced as wildlife refuge. This region is located in southeast of Sari and similar to plains forest lands is low altitude.
