ABSTRACT jbs-jul2006- (4) The aim of this study to know the structure and composition of ferns in Sinabung Mount forest. The research was conducted from Juli to December 2004. Sampling area was settled by using “Purposive Sampling Method” and data were collected with “Quadrat Method” on three area of different altitude (1450 – 1750 m; 1750 – 2050 m; and 2050 – 2450 m). The area size was 200 m by 5 m. The result showed there were 44 species of ferns that include in 23 families and 32 genera. From 44 species of ferns, 19 species grouped as terrestrial ferns, 10 species as ephyfit ferns, and 15 species as terrestrial of ephyfit. The structure of fern at location I and III was dominated by Cyathea borneensis with relative dominance value of 33.814% and 75.208%, respectively. Gleichennia lineralis dominated location III with relative dominance value of 44.872%. Terresterial fern composition of location I was dominated by Selaginella wildenowii with relative density value of 21.201%, while location II and III were dominated by Gleichennia lineralis with relative density value of 77.209% and 40.678%, respectively. Ephyfit fern composition of location I was dominated by Asplenium nidus with relative density value of 60.914%, while location II was dominated by Davallia bullata with relative density value of 52.521%, and location III was dominated by Crypsinus stenophyllus with relative density value of 34.899%.
