ABSTRACT: The concern for the development of concepts becomes even more important when we report to its use in Nursing theories, in which some concepts are considered central, such as person, environment, health and nursing. This study aims to discuss the historical evolution of the environment concept used in the Roy Adaptation Model. The method of analysis the study was based on is the evolutionary conceptual analysis of the concept Environment of the Roy Adaptation Model. According to the research results, Environment is introduced as the second major concept in the Roy Adaptation Model. In this theorist's interpretation of the environment, we notice her interest in surpassing the mechanistic point of view upon which the first version of the model was based. The approach of the concept of interaction between people and groups seems to represent an improvement, influenced by the current thoughts that are preeminent in nursing.

ABSTRACT: This article aims to identify the contributions of qualitative research to evidence-based practice in nursing. Qualitative research dates back to the 1920s and 1930s, when anthropologists and sociologists used qualitative research methods to study human phenomena in naturalistic settings and from a holistic viewpoint. Afterwards, other subject matters, including nursing, adopted qualitative methods to answer their research questions. The restructuring of health care over the past decade has brought about increased accountability in nursing research. One method for increasing this accountability is evidence-based practice. The method used was a search in the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature database from 1999-present. The search resulted in 61 citations for evidence-based practice in nursing research; however, only 5 citations focused on evidence-based practice and qualitative research. The authors' findings revealed six contributions of qualitative research to evidence-based practice: generation of hypotheses; development and validation of instruments; provision of context for evaluation; development of nursing interventions; development of new research questions; and application of Qualitative Outcome Analysis. Qualitative research makes important contributions to the quality of evidence-based practice.

In this article the common physiologic adaptation problems presented by patients with unstable angina were identified, having as a base Callista Roy’s Adaptation Model. A descriptive study was carried out in a specialized hospital for cardiac diseases. The sample for the study comprised a total of 20 patients. For characterization and discussion, we used the definitions presented by Roy for each physiologic adaptation problem identified. Regarding common physiologic adaptation problems, the following were identified: Activity intolerance, Constipation, Impairment of a primary sense: vision and audition, Nutrition in excess to body requirements, Sleep deprivation, Potential sleep pattern disturbance, Hyponatremia, Disuse syndrome, Restricted mobility, Anorexia, Memory deficit, Potential ineffective coping with allergic reaction, Stress, Oedema, Hypokalemia, Infection, Instability of Behavior and mood, and Delayed wound healing.
