De las palabras aisladas a las combinaciones de palabras

ABSTRACT Este trabajo analiza los aspectos implicados en la transición de la etapa de una palabra a la de las combinaciones de palabras. Primeramente se discute la naturaleza funcional vs. Estructural de las palabras aisladas con especial énfasis en su relación con las primeras combinaciones, destacándose el carácter paradójico del concepto de "holofrase" y su discutible valor como hipótesis explicativa. Se consideran entonces propuestas alternativas orientadas a establecer aquellos procesos y estrategias que los niños parecen utilizar para comenzar a combinar palabras. Se concluye que puede existir más de una vía de acceso a la combinación de palabras. Estas vías se apoyan en la forma en que sus habilidades cognitivo-sociales le hacen interpretar y dar sentido a los estímulos lingüísticos que acompañan a sus vivencias cotidianas y en la necesidad de comunicar las mismas en sus intercambios con los demás.

    ABSTRACT: Two transitional phases in the child's early language development are described; the first occurs between prelinguistic vocalization and one-word speech and the second between one-word and patterned speech. Cognitive, linguistic and affective inputs to the acquisition of reference and syntax are discussed in the light of the transitional phenomena that were found. We claim that each major linguistic stage is preceded by a transitional phase which serves as a bridging device for the next major acquisition; that sound and meaning develop partly independently in language development; and that the child's earliest patterned speech is not organized in terms of knowledge of grammatical categories, but in terms of more fundamental coordinations of conceptual meanings with phonetic outputs. A theoretical framework is proposed which provides a more systematic treatment of transitional phenomena than has previously been provided. The framework allows for interpretations of transitional phenomena and of their relations to the milestone periods of early language development.

    ABSTRACT: The study focuses on the language abilities of 30 20-month-old children, using data from two sources: a detailed maternal interview and 90 minutes of videotaped observation. Observed language was coded into the categories used for the interview. Production and comprehension at 28 months (MLU, PPVT and morphology comprehension) were also assessed. Observation and interview data at 20 months were highly intercorrelated. Cluster analyses of both data sets yielded referential, grammatical morpheme and dialogue clusters, providing partial support for the nominal/pronominal and referential/expressive acquisition styles reported in the literature. However, the referential and grammatical morpheme clusters were highly correlated, suggesting that two acquisition strategies are developing in parallel. Only for those children who heavily emphasize one strategy can one speak of a distinctive style. All interview and observation clusters predicted 28-months MLU, but the grammatical morpheme clusters did not predict later performance on a Grammatical Morpheme Test. It is tentatively suggested that holistic processing strategies underlie the pronominal/expressive style.

    ABSTRACT: Some recent findings concerning the early acquisition of word meaning are reviewed. It is argued that these findings can best be interpreted by postulating that the very young child uses scripts in order to mentally represent events in his environment. The development of word meaning is then viewed as occurring through the partitioning of these scripts by the child into their constituent elements, with the prototypes that are disembedded from these scripts providing the ontogenetic source of the meanings of object names.1.
