Doppler-derived deformation imaging in unsedated healthy adult dogs

To evaluate feasibility, repeatability and reproducibility (R&R) of Doppler-derived deformation imaging (DI) in healthy adult dogs.
Forty-nine dogs underwent physical examination, ECG, blood pressure measurement and echocardiography. Doppler-derived DI parameters obtained from six selected Regions of Interest (ROI) within the left ventricle (LV) were: strain (S), systolic strain rate (SSR), strain rate E wave (SRE), and strain rate A wave (SRA). The averages of the six ROIs were calculated and labeled avS, avSSR, avSRE, and avSRA. Randomly selected dogs underwent two echocardiographic studies to evaluate intraoperator (n=14) and interoperator (n=17) variability.
DI data were obtained in 87.2% of dogs and 77.2% of ROIs. Compared to controls, avSSR was significantly reduced in Doberman Pinchers (DP) and it was increased in dogs < 30 kg, compared to dogs > 30 kg. The intraoperator Coefficient of Variability (CV) for some ROIs was greater than 15% but for averaged measurements it was < or = 5.0%. Interoperator CV varied widely but were all < 15% for avSSR, avS, and avSRA.
The CV for Doppler-derived DI varied widely. Averaging values from multiple ROIs improved R&R. DI may help elucidate differences in LV mechanics between canine breeds.

    ABSTRACT: This paper reports a novel fabrication process of 3 dimensional (3-D) micro structures by double X-ray exposure in standard deep X-ray lithography (DXL). The proposed fabrication process made it possible to realize 3-D microstructures with an inclined and curved sidewall without any apparatuses and difficult process control. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of the double X-ray exposure technique, a micro-needle array fabrication was carried out. The sharp micro-needle array with the top radius of less than 100 nm was easily and successfully fabricated by the double X-ray exposure method.

    ABSTRACT: Compared to conventional polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si), re-crystallized (RC) metal-induced laterally crystallized (MILC) poly-Si possesses improved mechanical and electrical properties. RC-MILC poly-Si piezoresistors exhibit ∼25% increase in gauge factor and ∼50% reduction in noise level compared to conventional poly-Si piezoresistors. RC-MILC poly-Si transistors exhibit performance approaching those built on single-crystal silicon. As a demonstration of the feasibility of using the RC-MILC poly-Si technology to realize non-trivial micro-systems, microphone integrating piezoresistive strain sensors and amplifiers has been designed, fabricated and characterized.

    ABSTRACT: To determine reference values for septal longitudinal tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) in Doberman Pinschers. TDI includes several new techniques, such as tissue velocity imaging (TVI), strain, and strain rate that might be used to detect early myocardial dysfunction. However, before these techniques can be used, breed specific reference ranges need to be established. One-hundred healthy Doberman Pinschers ≥ 4 years of age were prospectively evaluated using electrocardiography, Holter recording, and echocardiography. Systolic, early and late diastolic parameters of septal longitudinal color-coded TVI, strain, and strain rate were analyzed in three myocardial segments (basal, middle, and apical). TDI was feasible in all Doberman Pinschers. Reference values were established for every myocardial segment. There was a significant velocity gradient from the basal to the apical segment for all TVI parameters. No differences between the three segments were found for systolic strain and strain rate. Several diastolic strain rate values were significantly different between myocardial segments. Influence of age, weight, and gender was not clinically relevant. This study provides reference values for TVI, strain, and strain rate in Doberman Pinschers. The parameters established here can be used for a supportive diagnostic approach.
