ABSTRACT In this paper, a comprehensive open-source three-dimensional (3-D) finite-element method (FEM) is proposed to model the dynamic behavior of liquid crystal (LC) directors in complex structures. This dynamic model is based on interactively iterating the vector representation of director profile and potential distribution. The director update formulations are derived in detail from the Galerkin's approach of FEM, including the weak form approach to simplify the highly nonlinear iteration equation. The potential update formulations are derived from the Ritz's approach of FEM. A 2-D in-plane switching (IPS) structure is used as an example to compare our approach with the FEM based commercial software (2dimMOS). The results from both programs show an excellent agreement. Furthermore, our method also agrees well with the finite-difference method (FDM) in studying a 3-D super IPS LC cell with zigzag electrodes.

##### Article: Characteristic Analysis of Spacial Electric Field Distribution in Liquid Crystal of TFT-LCD Panel
[Hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: In this paper, a three-dimensional finite element model based on the multi-pixel was constructed to accurately predict electric field distributions including an interference phenomenon between adjacent pixels in the liquid crystal of a complicated TFT-LCD panel. Utilizing the elaborate numerical model, the characteristics of spatial electric field distributions depending on various fault-electrode conditions are thoroughly examined on the basis of the field distribution of a normal electrode condition. The validity of the proposed model is proved by comparing the simulation results with those of the existing optical inspection equipments.

• ##### Article: Simulation of a vertically aligned fast response liquid crystal display with three-electrode driving
[Hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: We have proposed a vertically aligned fast response liquid crystal display (LCD) with three-electrode driving (FIS-VA-3T LCD). Both fringe and in-plane electric fields are used to obtain a strong horizontal electric field causing a high transmittance of the bright state. The normalised transmittance of the FIS-VA-3T cell is 12% higher than that of the previous vertically aligned liquid crystal cell with three-electrode driving (VA-3T). During the turn-off process, a trigger pulse is applied on the top electrode to compel the LC molecules vertically aligned rapidly to show the dark state. The turn-off is very fast (∼0.25 ms); 10 times as fast as that given by the vertical alignment liquid crystal cell (FIS-VA) driven by fringe and in-plane electric fields (∼2.5 ms). Such a fast response and high transmittance device is promising for colour sequential displays and other applications.

• ##### Article: Liquid Crystal Optical Channel Waveguides With Strong Polarization-Dependent Mode Tunability
[Hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: The electrically tunable liquid crystal (LC) optical channel waveguide with strong polarization-dependent mode tunability is demonstrated for the first time. When the applied voltage increases, the LC molecules encapsulated in the semicircular groove on the fused silica substrate gradually tilt upward and twist toward two sides. For TE polarization, the applied voltage slightly decreases the effective index and has a small effect on the field distribution of the guided mode. As to TM polarization, electrical tuning greatly enhances the effective index as larger as $2.234\,\times\,10^{-1}$ and causes an obvious variation of the mode size. The TM polarization has the lowest propagation loss 0.94 dB/cm up to date. It is attributed to high-optical quality substrate and smooth groove surface produced by chemical etching with the composite mask. The LC reorientation distribution and the full-vectorial guided mode characteristics at various voltages are calculated to explain the experimental results. The proposed LC-core channel waveguide owns the unique feature of strong polarization-dependent mode tunability and can be used as promising devices, such as ultrashort phase modulator, pulse-delayed device, and polarization controlling device.
