The potential demand for the satellite component of the Universal Mobile Telecommunication System

ABSTRACT The definition of the `third generation' Universal Mobile
Telecommunication System (UMTS) is currently in progress. The UMTS will
consist of both terrestrial and space components. The satellite
component is expected to operate alongside that of the terrestrial
component and provide a complementary rather than a competitive service.
First, the role of the satellite component of the UMTS is established,
from which potential different satellite-UMTS user groups are
identified. The number of users for each user group is then derived,
taking into account the gross potential market, the penetration rate of
the identified services and the profitability of providing such services
via satellite

    ABSTRACT: This paper is concerned with the development of an aggregate traffic intensity model suitable for the performance evaluation of the intersatellite link (ISL) network in global satellite systems, particularly applicable to support the dimensioning of satellite networks and for computer simulations of various procedures in the ISL network segment. The model consists of four modules considering global distribution of traffic sources and destinations, temporal variations of traffic source intensity, traffic flow patterns between regions, and statistical behavior of aggregated traffic sources. To support universal utilization of the proposed aggregate traffic intensity model, the individual modules need to be efficiently integrated and implemented as a highly parameterized software tool.

    ABSTRACT: Abstract Satellite and terrestrial cellular communication systems currently exist as two independent environments. In third generation systems these will complement each other and the cooperation between the two will allow for flexible and optimal radio resource allocation resulting in a reduction of some cost. However, the success of third generation systems will largely be dependent on their ability to provide improved quality of service over existing first and second generation systems, global coverage and an increased subscriber population. This paper reviews key features of the third generation systems, describes a teletraffic model suitable for such a multi-layer system, determines the benefits associated with a multilayer topology by studying the effect of the number of layers and the number of channels that can be supported by each layer and studies their effects on the performance parameters that determine the quality of service.
