Article: Terahertz Spectroscopy and Imaging for Defense and Security Applications
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: Terahertz (THz) radiation, which occupies a relatively unexplored portion of the electromagnetic spectrum between the mid-infrared and microwave bands, offers innovative sensing and imaging technologies that can provide information unavailable through conventional methods such as microwave and X-ray techniques. With the advancement of THz technologies, THz sensing and imaging will impact a broad range of interdisciplinary fields, including chemical and biological detections and identifications. In particular, THz radiation offers the opportunity for transformational advances in defense and security. Recent work shows that THz technologies are promising for the standoff detection and identification of explosive targets.Proceedings of the IEEE 09/2007; · 6.81 Impact Factor -

Article: The limit of spectral resolution in THz time-domain spectroscopy
[show abstract] [hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: This paper describes a study conducted into the limit on spectral resolution due to the dynamic range of a T-ray spectrometer. The pulsed nature of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) sets a fundamental limit on its spectral resolution. The spectral resolution of THz-TDS can be improved by increasing the duration of the temporal measurement, but is limited by the dynamic range of the system in the time-domain. This paper presents calculations and experimental results relating the temporal dynamic range of a THz-TDS system to its spectral resolution. We discuss three typical pulsed terahertz sources in terms of their dynamic range and hence achievable spectral resolution.
