[Show abstract][Hide abstract] ABSTRACT: The health quality of the environmental resources is controlled by the enumeration of bacteria or groups of bacteria indicators of faecal contamination. The Streptoccocus faecalis group is one of them. As a result of the changes in the taxonomy of the genus Streptococcus and the appearance of new species within the genus Enterococcus, this pollution indicator has been approached in a different way and the term "intestinal Enterecoccus and Streptococcus" has been proposed at present to refer to the bacteria of faecal origin of these 2 genuses used as indicators.
