ABSTRACT

We present a measurement of the inelastic, non diffractive J/$\psi$ photoproduction cross section in the reaction $e^{+} p \rightarrow e^{+} \mbox{J}/\psi X$ with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The J/$\psi$ was identified using both the $\mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ and $e^{+}e^{-}$ decay channels and events were selected within the range $0.4 ($0.5) for the muon (electron) decay mode, where $z$ is the fraction of the photon energy carried by the J/$\psi$ in the proton rest frame. The cross section, the $p^2_T$ and the $z$ distributions, after having subtracted the contributions from resolved photon and diffractive proton dissociative processes, are given for the photon-proton centre of mass energy range $50 GeV;$p^2_T$is the square of the J/$\psi$transverse momentum with respect to the incoming proton beam direction. In the kinematic range$0.4 and $p^2_T > 1$ GeV$^2$, NLO calculations of the photon-gluon fusion process based on the colour-singlet model are in good agreement with the data. The predictions of a specific leading order colour-octet model, as formulated to describe the CDF data on J/$\psi$ hadroproduction, are not consistent with the data.

##### Article: NLO production and decay of quarkonium

ABSTRACT: We present a calculation of next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to total hadronic production cross sections and to light-hadron-decay rates of heavy quarkonium states. Both colour-singlet and colour-octet contributions are included. We discuss in detail the use of covariant projectors in dimensional regularization, the structure of soft-gluon emission and the overall finiteness of radiative corrections. We compare our approach with the NLO version of the threshold expansion technique recently introduced by Braaten and Chen. Most of the results presented here are new. Others represent the first independent reevaluation of calculations already known in the literature. In this case a comparison with previous findings is reported.

ABSTRACT: We study the polar and azimuthal decay angular distribution of J/psi mesons in photoproduction experiments as functions of the inelasticity variable z and transverse momentum p(t). Future measurements of decay angular distributions at the DESY ep collider HERA will provide a new test of theoretical approaches to factorization between perturbation theory and quarkonium bound-state dynamics and shed light on the color-octet production fraction in various regions of z and p(t). ##### Article: TOPICAL REVIEW: Photon-photon physics in very peripheral collisions of relativistic heavy ions
[Hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: In central collisions at relativistic heavy ion colliders such as the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), Brookhaven and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) (in its heavy ion mode) at CERN, Geneva, one aims at detecting a new form of hadronic matter - the quark gluon plasma. It is the purpose of this review to discuss a complementary aspect of these collisions, the very peripheral ones. Owing to coherence, there are strong electromagnetic fields of short duration in such collisions. They give rise to photon-photon and photon-nucleus collisions with high flux up to an invariant mass region hitherto unexplored experimentally. After a general survey photon-photon luminosities in relativistic heavy ion collisions are discussed. Special care is taken to include the effects of strong interactions and nuclear size. Then photon-photon physics at various 0954-3899/24/9/003/img6-invariant mass scales is discussed. The region of several GeV, relevant for RHIC is dominated by quantum chronodynamics phenomena (meson and vector meson pair production). Invariant masses of up to about 100 GeV can be reached at LHC, and the potential for new physics is discussed. Photonuclear reactions and other important background effects, especially diffractive processes are also discussed. A special chapter is devoted to lepton-pair production, especially electron-positron pair production; owing to the strong fields new phenomena, especially multiple 0954-3899/24/9/003/img7 pair production, will occur there.
