Efectos de formato de respuesta y método de estimación en análisis factorial confirmatorio

ABSTRACT Se compara el funcionamiento del formato continuo frente al Likert de cinco puntos a partir de la administración de una batería de cuestionarios sobre autoestima a 640 estudiantes de enseñanza secundaria. El trabajo se centra en el comportamiento de los 20 items de la State Self-Esteem Scale (SSES) de Heatherton y Polivy (1991). Se someten a estudio diferentes modelos factoriales coherentes con el estudio de la validez de constructo de la escala (modelo de uno y tres factores y modelo multirrasgo-multimétodo) ofreciéndose las estimaciones por máxima verosimilitud y métodos de distribución libre. Tras evaluar el ajuste global y analítico de los modelos, se abordan cuestiones de carácter estadístico tales como aspectos diferenciales de los efectos de método en las escalas según formato de respuesta y método de estimación utilizados.

    ABSTRACT: The fuzzy rating scale was introduced to cope with the imprecision of human thought and experience in measuring attitudes in many fi elds of Psychology. The fl exibility and expressiveness of this scale allow us to properly describe the answers to many questions involving psychological measurement. Method: Analyzing the responses to a fuzzy rating scale-based questionnaire is indeed a critical problem. Nevertheless, over the last years, a methodology is being developed to analyze statistically fuzzy data in such a way that the information they contain is fully exploited. In this paper, a summary review of the main procedures is given. Results: The methods are illustrated by their application on the dataset obtained from a case study with nine-year-old children. In this study, children replied to some questions from the well-known TIMSS/ PIRLS questionnaire by using a fuzzy rating scale. The form could be filled in either on the computer or by hand. Conclusions: The study indicates that the requirements of background and training underlying the fuzzy rating scale are not too demanding. Moreover, it is clearly shown that statistical conclusions substantially often differ depending on the responses being given in accordance with either a Likert scale or a fuzzy rating scale.

    ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study is the construction and evaluation of the psychometric properties of an instrument that is capable of detecting the risk of addiction to social networks in adolescents between the ages of 14 and 18. For this reason, a conceptual definition of the construct was performed on the first stage of the study and a preliminary instrument (59 items) was developed based on the literature on addiction to new technologies. On the second stage, a pilot sample of 205 school students was considered. An exploratory factor analysis was performed in order to make a rigorous analysis of the theoretical and dimensional nature of the construct. On the third stage, the psychometric properties of the scale were verified along with 453 high school students ranging from third to fifth high school grades belonging to 7 high schools in the city of Lima Metropolitana, where the confirmatory factor analysis showed that the factor structure is good (RMSEA = .047, CFI = .91) and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient were between .71 and .96 for both the dimensions and the global scale. The scale finally consisted of 43 items assessing 7 dimensions of addiction to social networks: loss of control, abstinence syndrome, decreased academic performance, mood modification, dependency, loss of interest in other activities and conflicts in the social sphere. We conclude that the instrument gives evidence of good internal consistency and construct validity.

    ABSTRACT: Adolescents' use of the Internet is becoming a matter of great concern for different sectors of society. The psychological and behavioural consequences of problematic Internet use in young people demands quick and effective answers. One of the major challenges in this context is the development of empirically validated tools, which would facilitate early detection and screening for potential risk cases. This is precisely the aim of this paper. Based on a sample of 1,709 secondaryschool students from Galicia (a region in northern Spain) aged 11 to 17 (M = 13.74, SD = 1.43), the analysis carried out permitted us to present a brief and simple tool (with just 11 items). It has substantial theoretical support, since both the existing background information and the views of experts from the academic and professional spheres were taken into account in the course of its development. The scale is adapted to the Spanish cultural context and to the language of young people. It has satisfactory psychometric properties in terms of reliability of the scores (α = .82), evidence of its internal structure (tested via a Confirmatory Factorial Analysis), sensitivity (81%), and specificity (82.6%). Moreover, its use enables the gradation of adolescents on a risk or problematic Internet use continuum. In our view, all of this lends it enormous applied potential in both the educational and clinical contexts.
