Contenido del estereotipo de los maestros sobre los alumnos tartamudos

ABSTRACT El objetivo de este artículo es estudiar el contenido del estereotipo de los maestros de Educación Primaria sobre los alumnos tartamudos y las diferencias que se establecen en el mismo dependiendo de la experiencia docente de los maestros con estos alumnos. Para ello, 177 maestros de Educación Primaria respondieron a un cuestionario que, siguiendo el procedimiento de Katz y Braly para estudiar el contenido del estereotipo, incluye una lista de adjetivos en la que el maestro debe seleccionar los que describen a un alumno tartamudo. Los resultados indican que los maestros tienen un estereotipo negativo sobre los alumnos tartamudos y que la experiencia docente de los maestros con alumnos tartamudos determina diferencias significativas en dos adjetivos del contenido del estereotipo: inteligente e introvertido.

    ABSTRACT: Some university students who stutter report that they avoid participating in class discussions and talking with professors because they believe that if their professors find out they stutter, the professors are likely to view the students as being less intelligent and/or competent than they otherwise would. The purpose of this study was to determine whether professors, as a group, are likely to report such beliefs. A random sample of 87 professors at Marquette University, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and the State University of New York at Stonybrook rated “A Student Who Stutters” on each of 81 seven-point, bipolar semantic differential scales, including intelligent/unintelligent and competent/incompetent. Although there was considerable scatter in their ratings for the majority of the scales, 85 of the 87 rated the student at the center or “positive” end of the intelligent/unintelligent scale and 83 of the 87 did so on the competent/incompetent one. Assuming that the attitutes reported by the professors reflect their “real” ones, these data suggest that many—perhaps the majority—do not have negative attitudes about the intelligence and competence of their students who stutter.

    ABSTRACT: The attitudes of 1,198 speech-language pathologists toward stuttering, individuals who stutter and their parents, therapy, and related issues were studied between 1983 and 1991. Results of the study were compared with results obtained by the investigators in an identical study conducted between 1973 and 1983 of 674 speech-language pathologists. Among several changes in attitudes observed during the 18-year period were the rejection of concepts suggesting parental causality in fluency disorders, dangers in early intervention, and the perception that individuals who stutter possess characteristic personality traits. The results are interpreted as making a case for enhancing the education of the profession's general practitioner to serve those who stutter as well as developing a cadre of fluency specialists.

    ABSTRACT: Tested a theoretical model that sought to explain the association of stigma to self-esteem among adolescents with epilepsy. The model depicted hypothesized relationships among several characteristics of epilepsy (seizure type, seizure frequency, and duration of epilepsy), perceived stigma, management of disclosure, and self-esteem. Subjects were 64 adolescents 12 to 20 years old with idiopathic epilepsy. In a hierarchical multiple regression analysis, variables were entered into the equation in the order specified a priori by the model. Results showed that the data supported some hypotheses tested in the model: (a) Seizure type and seizure frequency predicted low self-esteem, and (b) the belief that epilepsy is stigmatizing predicted low self-esteem. However, several relationships of major theoretical significance were not realized. Explanations for why some aspects of stigma theory were not supported by the data are offered.
