ABSTRACT 37-38 In the last years carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted very great attention due to their exceptional properties. For their preparation, catalytic chemical vapour deposition (CCVD) of hydrocarbons over supported metal catalysts has been extensively studied. The as grown CCVD CNTs contain impurities, such as disordered carbon, catalyst and support. The amount of impurities prevents the use of the as-prepared materials for many scientific investigations and applications. Therefore, a great challenge remains in the control of their fabrication and purification. Recently, many purification methods have been investigated, most of them being based on a step involving oxidising attack by mineral acids for the removal of carbon nanotubes impurities.
