- "4,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid 1-methyl ether, in addition to the well-known hepatoprotective compound, 1,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (Ela et al. 2012). Investigation of specimens collected in Mallorca, Spain, showed to contain thymol derivatives, thiophenes and the diterpene abienol (Metwally & Dawidar 1985), and studies on specimens of I. crithmoides collected along the Spanish Mediterranean coast yielded a known bisnorlabdane and six thymol derivatives (Marco et al. 1993). Several other activities of I. crithmoides are shown: the extract protects against ochratoxin A-induced oxidative stress, and clastogenic and mutagenic alterations in male rats (Abdel-Wahhab et al. 2008); the aqueous and organic extracts were evaluated for their allelopathic activities on radish, lettuce, peganum and thistle and show a potent herbicidal activity (Omezzine et al. 2011); finally its acetonic extract possesses good antioxidant and antibacterial effects (Jallali et al. 2014). ABSTRACT: Inula crithmoides L. grows along the Mediterranean coasts and is used as an edible vegetable as the young leaves or shoots are eaten raw, cooked or pickled. Inula verbascifolia (Willd.) Hausskn. is a quite localised species growing mainly along the Adriatic Sea coasts. In this study the volatile components of the aerial part of both species are described. Gas chromatography and gas chromatography mass spectrometry analysis showed the presence of 41 components in I.crithmoides and 75 compounds in I.verbascifolia, respectively, and a very different profile in the composition of the two species. However, these compounds were not found in a reinvestigation of specimens collected in Mallorca, Spain, which were shown to contain thymol derivatives, thiophenes and the diterpene abienol . ABSTRACT: The chemical composition of the essential oil obtained from the aerial parts of Inula crithmoides L. was analyzed by GC and GC/MS and 22 components were identified, the major ones being p-cymene (30.1%), 1-methylethyl-trimethylbenzene (18.7%), scopoletin (15.3%) and alpha-pinene (13.1%). The antioxidant activity of the oil was evaluated by the DPPH test and 5-lipoxygenase assay. ABSTRACT: The interrelationships of the tribeInuleae s. str. have been analysed with a computerized parsimony program (Hennig 86), using theArctotideae as functional outgroup. The results are illustrated with a cladogram and a strict consensus tree. A detailed character discussion is presented. Descriptions of all genera are supplied with brief notes on distribution, references to chemical investigations, and chromosome numbers. Lists of recognized species are also presented in connection to each genus, respectively. 21 new combinations are made, one new genus,Xerolekia A. Anderb., is described,Mollera is reduced to a synonym ofCalostephane, and the genusDuhaldea is resuscitated.Anisopappus was found to be a paraphyletic basal group in the tribe.
