Outcome of occupational electrical injuries among French electric company workers: A retrospective report of 311 cases, 1996-2005

ABSTRACT This study reviewed records of all electrical incidents involving work-related injury to employees Electricité de France (EDF) from 1996 through 2005 and analysed data for 311 incidents. The results are compared with 1231 electrical incidents that occurred during 1970-1979 and 996 incidents during 1980-1989. A total of 311 electrical incidents were observed. The medical consequences of electrical incident remain severe and particularly, the current fatality rate (3.2%) is similar to that recorded in the 1980s (2.7%) and 1970s (3.3%). Among individuals with non-fatal incidents, any change has occurred in the prevalence of permanent functional sequelae (23.6% in the 1970s vs. 27.6% in the 1980s and 32.5% currently). An increase in the incidence of neuropsychiatric sequelae (5.4% in the 1980s vs. 13% currently) has been observed and they are now the second most common type of sequelae after those directly related to burns. Among the neurological sequelae, peripheral nervous system disorders are the most common, as observed in the 1980s. Since the definition of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has changed between the two periods, we can only report that the current prevalence of PTSD is 7.6%. This study emphasises the need for specific management of neurological and psychological impairments after electrical injuries, including especially early recognition and initiation of effective treatment.

    ABSTRACT: Electrical burn causes arterial and vein thrombosis, as well as artery weakness. We report an arterial bleeding due to a spontaneous artery rupture after electrical burn. This case report illustrates the difficulty in the thromboprophylaxis choice in these circumstances.

    ABSTRACT: Breast cancer is the most common occurring cancer in women worldwide. Various factors that have lead to change in lifestyle are thought to be associated with increase in breast cancer incidence in Asian countries. Several clinical studies suggest the prognostic significance of serum lipid levels in breast cancer. Present study was planned to confirm the association of lipids levels with breast cancer. Lipid analyses was carried out on serum samples from 100 breast cancer patients and 100 control women, with a age group of 25 y and above. The case & control group included 50 premenopausal women and 50 postmenopausal women. Patients of study group had high Low density lipoproteins (LDL) (p-value - 0.00), Triglycerides (TG) (p-value -0.001) and Total cholesterol (TC) (p-value -0.00) as compared to control group. There was no association of VLDL (p-value -0.436) and HDL (p-value -0.797) among study group and control group. There was no association of lipid levels in different grades of carcinoma. High levels of LDL, TG and TC were associated with breast cancer. However, no association was there in different grades of carcinoma. So it may be concluded that, LDL, TG and TC may be having some role in aetiology of breast cancer. Therefore, early detection and control of these factors may help in reducing the incidence of breast cancer and ultimately social and economic burden on society.

    ABSTRACT: All will agree that invention of electricity has changed the world. Today nobody can think of living without an uninterrupted supply. Electricity is definitely a boon to the mankind but this turns into a curse when it becomes a cause of disaster. Electrical burn injuries are the most destructive injuries with a potential of causing significant functional disability and extensive disfigurement in the survivors. We carried out a retrospective observational study on the 110 patients of electric burns admitted to our hospital between January 2007 and October 2014. The aim of the study was to determine the demographic and clinical profile of patients who had sustained electrical burn injury, with a special emphasis on limb loss. Section-2 of Workman's Compensation Act 1923 was used for the calculation of an individual's disability due to amputation. All the data was analysed using method of simple percentages and presented in a tabular form. Forty eight patients (43.63%) of electric burn belonged to the age group of 21-30 y, with male preponderance (M:F:: 93.6 : 6.4). This shows that the individual affected more often are invariably the breadwinners of the family.Twenty four, out of these 110 patients have undergone one or more than one amputation. Significantly the numbers of upper limb amputations have exceeded any other amputation in this study. Mortality in patients of electrical burns is 6.36% in comparison to mortality of 45.67% in all burn patients. Loss of upper limb completely reduces the earning capacity of an individual. Future and fortune of the individual's family is jeopardized. Such accidents can be prevented by following safety norms and simple precautions while using the electrical equipment.
