Effects of Creatine Monohydrate and Polyethylene Glycosylated Creatine Supplementation on Muscular Strength, Endurance, and Power Output

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a moderate dose of creatine monohydrate (CM) and two smaller doses of polyethylene glycosylated (PEG) creatine on muscular strength, endurance, and power output. Fifty-eight healthy men (mean +/- SD: age, 21 +/- 2 years; height, 176 +/- 6 cm; body mass [BM], 75 +/- 14 kg) volunteered and were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 groups: (a) placebo (PL; 3.6 g of microcrystalline cellulose; n = 15), (b) CM (5 g of creatine; n = 13), (c) small-dose PEG creatine (1.25 g of creatine: PEG1.25; n = 14), or (d) moderate-dose PEG creatine (2.50 g of creatine: PEG2.50; n = 16). Testing was conducted before (pre-) and after (post-) a 30-day supplementation period. Measurements included body mass, countermovement vertical jump (CVJ) height, power output during the Wingate test (peak power [PP] and mean power [MP]), 1 repetition maximum bench press (1RMBP), 1RM leg press (1RMLP) strength, and repetitions to failure at 80% of the 1RM for bench press (REPBP) and leg press (REPLP). BM and MP (W) increased (p <or= 0.05) from pre- to postsupplementation for the CM group only, whereas 1RMBP and 1RMLP increased (p <or= 0.05) for the CM, PEG1.25, and PEG2.50 groups. CVJ height (cm and cm.kg), MP (W.kg), PP (W and W.kg), REPBP, and REPLP increased (p <or= 0.05) for all groups. These findings indicated that the recommended safe dose of 5 g.d of CM increased BM and improved muscle strength (1RMBP and 1RMLP). Smaller doses of PEG creatine (1.25 and 2.50 g.d) improved muscle strength (1RMBP and 1RMLP) to the same extent as 5 g.d of CM, but did not alter BM, power output, or endurance. When compared to the PL group, neither CM nor PEG creatine supplementation improved peak power output (CVJ or PP), MP, or muscle endurance (REPBP or REPLP). Thus, PEG creatine may have ergogenic effects that are comparable to those of CM, but with a smaller dose of creatine.

    ABSTRACT: The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of the daily administration of an arginine-based supplement for 4 weeks on the gas exchange threshold (GET) and peak oxygen uptake. The study used a double-blind, placebo-controlled design. Forty-one college-aged males (mean age ± SD = 22.1 ± 2.4 years) were randomized into either the PLACEBO (n = 20) or ARGININE (n = 21) group. The placebo was microcrystalline cellulose. The ARGININE group ingested 3.0 g of arginine, 300 mg of grape seed extract, and 300 mg of polyethylene glycol. All subjects performed an incremental test to exhaustion on a cycle ergometer prior to supplementation (PRE) and after 4 weeks of supplementation (POST). The GET was determined by using the V-slope method of the carbon dioxide output vs. oxygen uptake relationship. The results indicated that there were significant mean increases (PRE to POST) in GET (4.1%), as well as in carbon dioxide output (4.3%) and power output (5.4%) at the GET for the ARGININE group, but no significant changes for the PLACEBO group (2.5%, 4.3%, and 3.9%, respectively). In addition, there were no significant changes in peak oxygen uptake for the ARGININE (-1.0%) or PLACEBO (-1.5%) groups. These findings supported the use of the arginine-based supplement for increasing GET and the associated power output, but not for increasing peak oxygen uptake during cycle ergometry.Cette étude se propose d'analyser les effets de l'administration quotidienne d'un supplément à base d'arginine durant quatre semaines sur le seuil des échanges gazeux (GET) et la consommation d'oxygène de pointe. On se sert d'un devis expérimental à double insu et d'un groupe de contrôle. Quarante-et-un hommes âgés de 22,1 ± 2,4 ans (moyenne ± écart-type) sont répartis aléatoirement dans 2 groupes, PLACEBO (n = 20) ou ARGININE (n = 21). La substance placebo est de la cellulose microcristalline. Le groupe expérimental consomme 3,0 g d'arginine, 300 mg d'extrait de pépin de raisin et 300 mg de glycol polyéthylénique. Avant la supplémentation (PRE) et quatre semaines après cette dernière (POST), tous les sujets participent à une épreuve d'effort progressif jusqu'à épuisement sur une bicyclette ergométrique. On détermine le GET par la méthode du point d'intersection sur la pente production de gaz carbonique contre la consommation d'oxygène de pointe. De PRE à POST, on observe dans le groupe expérimental une augmentation significative du GET (4,1 %), du production de gaz carbonique (4,3 %) et de la puissance produite (5,4 %) au GET; on n'observe aucune variation significative dans le groupe de contrôle (2,5 %, 4,3 % et 3,9 %, respectivement). En outre, on n'observe aucune augmentation significative du consommation d'oxygène de pointe dans le groupe expérimental (-1,0 %) et le groupe de contrôle (-1,5 %). D'après ces observations, on peut consommer un supplément à base d'arginine pour élever le GET et la puissance produite au GET, mais pas pour augmenter la consommation d'oxygène de pointe sur une bicyclette ergométrique.

    ABSTRACT: The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of daily oral administration of arginine-based supplements for 4 weeks on the physical working capacity at the fatigue threshold (PWCFT). The PWCFT test is an electromyographic (EMG) procedure for estimating the highest power output that can be maintained without neuromuscular evidence of fatigue. The study used a double-blind, placebo-controlled design. Fifty college-aged men (mean age +/- SD = 23.9 +/- 3.0) were randomized into 1 of 3 groups: (a) placebo (n = 19); (b) 1.5 g arginine (n = 14); or (c) 3.0 g arginine (n = 17). The placebo was microcrystalline cellulose. The 1.5-g arginine group ingested 1.5 g of arginine and 300 mg of grape seed extract, whereas the 3.0 g arginine group ingested 3.0 g of arginine and 300 mg of grape seed extract. All subjects performed an incremental test to exhaustion on a cycle ergometer to determine their PWCFT before supplementation (PRE) and after 4 weeks of supplementation (POST). Surface EMG signals were recorded from the vastus lateralis using a bipolar electrode arrangement during the incremental tests for the determination of the PRE and POST supplementation PWCFT values. There were significant mean increases (PRE to POST) in PWCFT for the 1.5 g (22.4%) and 3.0 g (18.8%) supplement groups, but no change for the placebo group (-1.6%). These findings supported the use of arginine-based supplements, at the dosages examined in the present investigation, as an ergogenic aid for untrained individuals.
