A summary of recent aircraft/ground vehicle friction measurement tests
ABSTRACT Tests were carried out to evaluate a variety of runway surface types and wetness conditions, using specially instrumented NASA B-737 and B-727 aircraft and several ground friction measuring devices. The performance data for aircraft braking on dry, wet, snow-covered, and ice-covered runway conditions are presented and compared to ground-vehicle friction data obtained under similar runway conditions. The relationships between ground vehicles and the aircraft friction data are identified, and the effects on friction of major test parameters, such as the speed, the tire characteristics, and the type of surface-contaminant are discussed. The results demonstrated that properly maintained and calibrated ground vehicles can be used to monitor the runway friction conditions.
