Towards a European Food Composition Rata Interchange Platform

ABSTRACT Food composition data (FCD) comprises the description and identification of foods, as well as their nutrient content, other constituents, and food properties. FCD are required for a range of purposes including food labeling, supporting health claims, nutritional and clinical management, consumer information, and research. There have been differences within and beyond Europe in the way FCD are expressed with respect to food description, definition of nutrients and other food properties, and the methods used to generate data. One of the major goals of the EuroFIR NoE project (2005 - 10) was to provide tools to overcome existing differences among member states and parties with respect to documentation and interchange of FCD. The establishment of the CEN’s (European Committee for Standardisation) TC 387 project committee on Food Composition Data, led by the Swedish Standards Institute, and the preparation of the draft Food Data Standard, has addressed these deficiencies by enabling unambiguous identification and description of FCD and their quality, for dissemination and data interchange. Another major achievement of the EuroFIR NoE project was the development and dissemination of a single, authoritative source of FCD in Europe enabling the interchange and update of data between countries, and also giving access to users of FCD.

    ABSTRACT: The food chemical composition databases provide a detailed information on nutritional composition, derived from the specific needs of each country. Data sources and their quality should be documented for each nutrient and in accordance with international and regional standards. The collaboration with leadership of the EuroFIR Project and contacts with various representatives of the participating countries contributed to capacity development in our country in a following way: EuroFIR workshops, training courses, self training.Thus, only helped the professional growth of staff to learn the basic criteria for correct description, identification of foods and establishment and compiling of Bulgarian food chemical composition database. Bulgarian Food Composition Data Base includes 828 foods with 37 nutrients for each food: • English food names and Bulgarian food names • No Scientific names • 828 food codes • Original Food Group • Nitrogen to protein conversion factor (NCF) and the Fatty acid conversion factor (FACF) were provided for a number of foods • LanguaL food description - for all foods

    ABSTRACT: Voluntary food fortification is regulated at European level through Regulation (EC) No 1925/2006. To evaluate the impact of the Regulation on the European diet, Member States were asked to monitor dietary exposure to micronutrients through voluntarily fortified foods. This paper aims to identify some of the issues for Member States in providing the relevant monitoring information for the Regulation, and to suggest potential alternatives to the ‘ideal’ information that could assist the European Commission in assessing the impact of the Regulation.

    ABSTRACT: Food composition databases (FCDBs) form an integral part of nutrition and health research, patient treatment, manufacturing processes, and consumer information. FCDBs have traditionally been compiled at a national level; therefore, until recently, there was limited standardization of procedures across different data sets. Digital technologies now allow FCDB users to access a variety of information from different sources, which has emphasized the need for greater harmonization. The European Food Information Resource (EuroFIR) Network of Excellence and Nexus projects (2005–2013) has been instrumental in addressing differences in FCDBs and in producing standardized protocols and quality schemes to compile and manage them. A formal, recognized European standard for food composition data has been prepared, which will further assist in the production of comparable data. Quality schemes need to address both the composition data, plus the methods of sampling, analysis, and calculation, and the documentation of processes. The EuroFIR data exchange platform provides a wealth of resources for composition compilers and end users and continues to develop new and innovative tools and methodologies. EuroFIR also is working in collaboration with the European Food Safety Authority, and as a partner in several European projects. Through such collaborations, EuroFIR will continue to develop FCDB harmonization and to use new technologies to ensure sustainable future initiatives in the food composition activities that underpin food and health research in Europe.
