ABSTRACT Bendigoles A approximately C are the first secondary metabolites to be isolated from a member of the actinomycete genus Gordonia. They were detected in a culture filtrate extract of Gordonia australis Acta 2299 by HPLC-diode array analysis and characterized as new steroids by mass spectrometry and NMR experiments. Bendigole C show binding affinity to the human progesterone and A approximately C to androgen receptor but are inactive at mineralocorticoid and estrogen receptors. In in vitro transactivation studies bendigoles A and C showed moderate and weak androgenic activities.

    ABSTRACT: Studies of steroid modifications catalyzed by microbial whole cells represent a well-established research area in white biotechnology. Still, advances over the last decade in genetic and metabolic engineering, whole-cell biocatalysis in non-conventional media, and process monitoring raised research in this field to a new level. This review summarizes the data on microbial steroid conversion obtained since 2003. The key reactions of structural steroid functionalization by microorganisms are highlighted including sterol side-chain degradation, hydroxylation at various positions of the steroid core, and redox reactions. We also describe methods for enhancement of bioprocess productivity, selectivity of target reactions, and application of microbial transformations for production of valuable pharmaceutical ingredients and precursors. Challenges and prospects of whole-cell biocatalysis applications in steroid industry are discussed.

    ABSTRACT: Hurgadacin (1), a 24,25-bishomo-26-methylenecholesterol was isolated from the soft coral Sinularia polydactyla, collected from the Red Sea, near Hurghada at the Egyptian coast. The new steroid 1 was isolated together with the closely related polyhydroxy steroids 24-methylenecholestane-3β,5α,6β-triol (2) and 24-methylenecholestane-1α,3β,5α,6β,11α-pentol (3), in addition to the sesquiterpene lactiflorenol (4) and the trinorcarotenolide acetate peridinin (5), The structures of the isolated compounds were confirmed by intensive studies of their 1D and 2D NMR spectra and mass data. The antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities of the soft coral extract and the corresponding constituents were evaluated against diverse pathogenic microorganisms and brine shrimps, respectively.
