In vitro Antimicrobial activity of Acacia nilotica, Ziziphus mauritiana, Bauhinia variegate and Lantana camara against some clinical isolated strains

ABSTRACT Plants are potent biochemists; biologically active compounds present in the medicinal plants have always been of great interest to scientists working in this field. Thus, the aim of the current study was to screen the antimicrobial activity of Acacia nilotica, Ziziphus mauritiana, Bauhinia variegate and Lantana camara against some selected clinical isolated strains. Although previous studies have documented the antimicrobial properties of these plants, this work is designed to evaluate the specific antibacterial activity of different extracts of these plants against tested microorganisms, in order to know the best extract against specific microorganisms. In this study the fresh parts (leaves, barks & pods) of the test medicinal plant were collected and methanol, ethanol and ethyl acetate extracts were prepared. Antibacterial susceptibility test was done by using Agar diffusion assay method. Statistical analysis was carried out with SPSS 17.0 Windows version. The results of the current study showed that a total of 8 extracts from 4 different plant species were investigated including pods of ethyl acetate extracts of Lantana camara, which showed the highest antimicrobial activity against tested clinical isolates (Bacillus subtilus 2±0.1mm, Bacillus circulans 2.6±0.2mm, Bacillus sphaericius 2±0.1mm, Staphylococcus aureus 2.5±0.1, and Serratia liquefaciens 2.2±0.1mm), followed by its ethyl acetate extracts of leaves. Bark extracts of four tested medicinal plants possess a lower zone on inhibitory activity as compared to the leaves extracts of these plants. Noticeably no antimicrobial activity was found in the methonolic bark extract of Acacia nilotica against the tested bacteria except Bacillu ciurlans. The results of the present investigation clearly indicate that the antibacterial activity varies with the species of the plants and plant material used. Thus, the study ascertains the value of plants used in ayurveda, which could be of considerable interest to the development of new drugs. Studies are in progress to further evaluate the mechanisms of action of these active test extracts on study organisms associated with certain human diseases.

    ABSTRACT: Objective To evaluate the antioxidant activity, hydrogen peroxide radicals scavenging activity, reducing power, the total phenolic and flavonoids contents, and antimicrobial and antifungal activities of methanol, ethanol and water extracts of leaves of Lantana camara (L. camara). Methods Methanol, ethanol and water extracts were evaluated against four Gram positive and Gram negative bacterial isolates (Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Bacillus subtilis) and two fungal strains (Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus flavus). Methanol extract at different concentrations was tested for antioxidant potential and phytochemicals were determined by using spectrophotometric method. Results The total phenolic content was (40.859±0.017) mg gallic acid/g in the leaves of L. camara, while the total flavonoids was (53.112±0.199) mg/g dry weight. Methanol leaf extract of L. camara showed maximum antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and was also effective against other bacterial strains as compared to ethanol and aqueous extracts of leaves. The methanol leaf extract of L. camara exhibited significant inhibition (71%) and (66%) against Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus flavus respectively. Conclusions The methanol extract of the L. camara leaves is effective against selected bacterial and fungal strains. Its phytochemical contents have broad antimicrobial properties and the plant might be a novel source of antimicrobial drug.

    ABSTRACT: Ziziphus mauritiana L., is a fruit tree well known for its nutritional and medicinal benefits. The aim of the current study was to investigate the chemical composition as well as biological (antioxidant, antimicrobial, antitumor and anticancer) attributes of different solvent extracts from the leaves of Ziziphus mauritiana. It was established by colorimetric method that chloroform extract had greater amount of total phenolics (84.69 ± 0.92 μg GAE/mg of extract), while methanol extract contained higher content of total flavonoids (46.94±1.55 μg QE/mg of extract). Meanwhile, methanol extract exhibited higher DPPH free radical scavenging potential (IC50 = 0.11 mg/mL) and antimicrobial (antibacterial and antifungal) activity among others. Overall, E. coli was noted to be the most resistant microbial strain against all the tested extracts. Chloroform extract showed strongest antitumor (IC50 = 70.74μg/mL) and anticancer activity (IC50 values of 27.78 and 18.32 μg/mL against human cancer cell lines U937 and HCT-116, respectively) and significantly inhibited the viability of these cell lines.According to GC-MS analysis methyl stearate (15.59%), plamitic acid (38.55%) and α-linolenic acid (26.45%) were identified as the major components of methanol, chloroform and hexane extracts, respectively in addition to presence of several other bioactives. The results of this study conclude that Z. mauritiana leaves extract with efficient biological activities can be explored for potential uses as antioxidant, antitumor and anticancer agents for pharmaceutical industry.
