Smart home sensors for the elderly: a model for participatory formative evaluation

ABSTRACT This paper describes an evaluation framework for a smart home project that utilizes sensor technologies to detect activity levels and monitor older adults. The study setting is TigerPlace, an independent retirement community designed to follow the model of aging in place. Technologies used include a stove sensor, a bed sensor, a gait monitor and a video sensor network. The evaluation framework includes focus groups with end users (older adults and health care providers) as well as observations. Preliminary findings indicate an overall positive attitude of older adults towards smart home sensors and a valid and reliable performance. End users need to be included in all stages of a smart home development (design. Implementation and testing) and become actively involved in a formative evaluation of the technology.

    ABSTRACT: Over years, radical changes in engineering technology have taken place due to greatly improved instrumentation, enhanced computing power, new sensors and upgraded transmission mediums making it possible to achieve in the field what once could only be done on laboratory models. In daily life, the use of an active self-testing instrumentation endowed with a self-diagnostic capability built into the structural fabric of a machine permits us to monitor the initiation of breakdown, corrosion and erosion. This has become particularly important in such means of transportation as planes, boats and automobiles where advanced instrumentation, signal processing and pattern recognition systems operate in fairly conventional structures. By capitalizing on the technological progress in the field of instrumentation and data processing, help can be contemplated for elderly people in nursing homes through detection of abnormal situations. The continued assistance to elderly people is achieved by utilizing a technological system respectful of the elderly's privacy and operating without their active participation.

    ABSTRACT: Aging populations and rising health costs have created the need to care for more patients in their own homes. Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) is developing a project, Hospital Without Walls, which aims to provide continuous monitoring of patients in certain diagnostic categories. The key technology is a miniature, wearable, low-power radio that can transmit vital sign and activity information to a home computer, from which data may be sent by telephone line and the Internet to appropriate medical professionals. The initial clinical scenario for this work is monitoring of elderly patients who have presented to hospitals following repeated falls. Accelerometers built into the radio sets will monitor activity and detect and characterise falls. Simultaneous measurement of heart rate will provide information about abnormalities of cardiovascular physiology at the time of a fall. The system has been tested in laboratory conditions and is being adapted for initial clinical trials.
