Dispersion induced effects of high‐order optical sidebands in the performance of millimeter‐wave fiber‐optic links

ABSTRACT In this paper, chirped fiber Bragg gratings (CFBGs) are proposed as signal-phase controllers for microwave-photonic wireless downstream fiber links. The effect of high-order modulation optical sidebands that disturbs the output mm-wave signal due to the chromatic dispersion induced by the gratings is studied theoretically and experimentally. The 1st and 2nd mm-wave harmonics of the output signal have been measured for conventional intensity modulation and for intensity modulation with optical carrier suppression. In the last case, data transmission at 2.5 Gb/s is demonstrated through a chirped grating of 280 ps/nm dispersion in a 40-GHz modulated link. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     ABSTRACT: Single side-band (SSB) technologies are especially useful in optical fiber communication systems, such as higher density wavelength multiplexing and long-haul fiber transmission due to less nonlinear optical effects, because of the reduced optical power. This letter reports on the SSB modulation performance of a LiNbO/sub 3/ integrated modulator consisting of four phase modulator waveguides. Optical SSB modulation with suppressions of main carrier (-22.6 dB) and J/sub 3/ subcarrier (-18.4 dB) of a 10-GHz single-tone signal with a driving voltage of 6.3 V/sub p-p/ was demonstrated. The total insertion loss was 10.6 dB.

    ABSTRACT: The electrical bandwidth limitation of continuous variable time delay units based on chirped fibre gratings is studied. The radiofrequency response of a linearly chirped fibre grating with an optical bandwidth of 4 nm and a dispersion of nearly 850 ps/nm has shown a -3 dB bandwidth of 6.4 GHz. To overcome this limitation, the use of a single-sideband plus carrier generator employing a dual-drive electro-optical modulator is experimentally demonstrated

    ABSTRACT: The spectrum of an intensity modulated (IM) and a combined intensity-frequency modulated (IM-FM) monochromatic light source has been generated. The amplitudes of the modulated carrier and the first three pairs of sidebands are plotted showing the influence of IM on an FM signal. The effects of first order chromatic dispersion on the baseband amplitude response and harmonic distortion are determined. The manner in which modulation type and depth, modulating frequency, wavelength, and fiber length alter harmonic distortion is presented. Numerical examples giving the amplitude response of a single-mode fiber system as well as the magnitude of the second- and third-harmonic distortion caused by chromatic dispersion are presented. Based on this material, the limits placed on analog transmission due to chromatic dispersion may be assessed.
