ABSTRACT Grappling with genetic results is a problem that families and their primary doctors will be facing with increasing frequency. This commentary focuses on the complexities of how a family with a BRCA1 mutation came to know their genetics. The piece illustrates why ongoing medical research is so important and yet is so fraught with unforeseen issues that are made more complex unless there is separation of clinical care and research. The surprises and lessons of this story illustrate how genetic information is often misunderstood despite the precision of the science.
