ABSTRACT Eco-design is a new concept that is emphasized in Europe and that is coming fast to North America, even if the USA has not signed the Kyoto protocol that tries to stop and to reduce the global warming under way. As an illustration of this concern and the current European Directives (as prescribed by the European parliament), this paper describes the efforts of a company to use the new world standards to the design characteristics of a new gas insulated substation (G.I.S.) 72.5 kV. The objective, within the design process, requires that we keep the environmental impact of such substations as low as possible
