ABSTRACT This paper presents a design for a fault diagnosis system (FDS) for tapped HV/EHV power transmission lines. These lines have two different protection zones. The proposed approach reduces the cost and the complexity of the FDS for these types of lines. The FDS consists basically of fifteen artificial neural networks (ANNs). The FDS basic objectives are mainly: (1) the detection of the system fault; (2) the localization of the faulted zone; (3) the classification of the fault type; and finally (4) the identification of the faulted phase. This FDS is structured in a three hierarchical levels. In the first level, a preprocessing unit to the input data is performed. An ANN, in the second level, is designed in order to detect and zone localize the line faults. In the third level, two zone diagnosis systems (ZDS) are designed. Each ZDS is dedicated to one zone and consists of seven parallel-cascaded ANN's. Four-parallel ANN's are designed in order to achieve the fault type classification. While, the other three cascaded ANN's are designed mainly for the selection of the faulted phase. A smoothing unit is also configured to smooth out the output response of the proposed FDS.The proposed FDS is designed and evaluated using the local measurements of the three-phase voltage and current samples acquired at only one side. The sampling rate was taken 16 samples per cycle of the power frequency. Data window of 4 samples was utilized. These samples were generated using the EMTP simulation program, applied to the High-Dam/Cairo 500 kV tapped transmission line. All possible shunt fault types were considered. The effect of fault location and fault incipience time were also included. Moreover, the effect of load and capacitor switchings on the FDS performance was investigated. Testing results have proved the capability as well as the effectiveness of the proposed FDS.

• ##### Article: Adaline for Online Symmetrical Components and Phase-Angles Identification in Transmission Lines
[Hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: This paper presents a new method for online symmetrical components and phase-angle extraction from high-voltage transmission-line faults. This method is based on the Adaline neural networks and the instantaneous power theory, also known as the $p-q$ method. A new current decomposition is proposed in order to derive the direct, inverse, and homopolar current components. The average and oscillating terms of powers in the $\alpha \beta$ frame are separated by using four Adaline neural networks. The Adalines use a cosine and sine as inputs in order to learn the linear combination of the powers. The resulting symmetrical components are used by three other Adalines for phase-angle estimation between direct and inverse current components. These phase angles permit classifying the fault types. The neural networks use an online learning process-based Widrow–Hoff algorithm and can adapt their weight parameters to the power-supply evolution. Simulation results show the performance and the robustness of this method and provide a perspective for protection relay improvement.

[Hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: In this study, a digital fault location and monitoring technique using programmable logic controller (PLC) for primary overhead power distribution networks is presented. This technique employs pre- and post-fault current and voltage information along with data from the laterals. By using lateral current data transferred through shielded coaxial cables to the substation, the possibility of multiple fault point locations are eliminated. The effectiveness of this method is verified through Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP) simulations.

• ##### Article: Isolation and structural characterization of two tadalafil analogs found in dietary supplements
[Hide abstract]
ABSTRACT: During routine screenings of two "libido enhancer" dietary supplements using LC-MS(n), two compounds were detected that displayed structural similarities to tadalafil. These compounds were isolated from the supplements using high-performance liquid chromatography with fraction collection, and were characterized further using accurate mass determination and NMR. "Compound 1" had an m/z of 434 for the [M+H]⁺ ion, with a corresponding chemical formula of C₂₄H₂₄N₃O₅. "Compound 2" had an m/z of 432 for the [M+H]⁺ ion, with a corresponding chemical formula of C₂₅H₂₆N₃O₄. Although mass spectrometry indicated that these modifications occurred in place of the -CH₃ found on the pyrazinopyridoindole-1,4-dione of tadalafil, NMR was required to elucidate the correct configurations of these substitutions. The data obtained using NMR indicated that the structure of the -C₃H₇O moiety found in Compound 1 was 2-hydroxypropyl, and the -C₄H₉ in Compound 2 was n-butyl. These new analogs were given the names 2-hydroxypropylnortadalafil and n-butylnortadalafil, respectively.
